He Counted Seconds With Me and Seasons With Her Chapter 06

I stared at that message for a long time.

So long that when my mother came in carrying a bowl of chicken soup, I hadn’t even noticed.

“Whose message is it? You’re so absorbed.”

My mother set the chicken soup down and leaned closer.

“No one. Just an irrelevant stranger.”

I put my phone face-down and gave my mother a bright smile.

Actually, if Nathan just went home and took a look, he would find that everything in the house related to me

was gone.

The prepared veggie bowls in the fridge, always ready for his diet. The hot water in the living room for his sensitive stomach. The jars and bottles of his favorite pickled peppers in the kitchen. And the herbal pillow always placed at the head of the bed to treat his insomnia.

This home was originally empty.

It was my arrival that gradually filled it up, piece by piece.

That once-vivid red rose had trimmed its own thorns, bit by bit, to take the shape of a housewife.

But Nathan knew none of this.

Even now, he still thought I was just throwing a tantrum.

I forcefully suppressed the faint ache in my heart and took the bowl of chicken soup.

It was savory and delicious, with a sweet aftertaste.

I hadn’t tasted such good flavor in a very long time.

My mother watched me devour the food, her face full of affection.

“By the way, last night I heard your father say you want to go to the Rockies to see the snow?”

I nodded.

The next second, my mother’s voice rang out. “We don’t have to wait until winter. We’ll set out tomorrow.”

My hand holding the soup spoon paused. I tasted salt at the corner of my mouth.

It was the taste of tears, flowing down my cheeks to the corner of my lips.

I looked at my mother. My mother also looked at me.

Our eyes met in that moment. We didn’t need many words; we understood each other completely.

So the people who truly love you won’t make you wait. Won’t make you guess.

Won’t use a timer to slice love into cold calculations.

For any relationship,

companionship is the truest declaration of love.

The day we packed and set out was the most beautiful season in Denver.

The sky was high and far. The earth was wide and vast.

Gazing at the birds in the distance, I half-joked,

“Don’t you think it would be wonderful if we had wings? Like those birds, we could fly wherever we wanted.”

My father patted my shoulder.

“You already have wings.”

“Your mother and I-we’re your strongest, most reliable wings.”

I looked at the two people before me, both already past their prime. Time had taken the dark from their hair, but it hadn’t taken even a fraction of the love they gave me.

For a long moment, my eyes welled with tears.

“Okay. Our family, together. Never apart.”

From then on, under this vast sky, I was no longer alone.
