Three Wolfens Betrayed Me. One Siren Didn’t Chapter 13

Three Wolfens Betrayed Me. One Siren Didn’t Chapter 13

Selina hated her sister.

She always had.

It started in elementary school. Her sister was surrounded by friends – boys and girls. Her sister would stand in the middle of them, smiling, like the first flower of spring.

Then she’d notice Selina. Wave her over. *”Selina! Come here!”*

Everyone would look at her with wide eyes.

Her sister would pull a piece of candy from her pocket. *”Strawberry. Your favorite. I saved it for you.*

Selina would smile and take it.

Then one of her sister’s friends would say, “Evelyn’s so sweet. She remembers everyone’s favorites!”*

Selina’s smile would freeze.

Why did her sister have to be nice to *everyone*? She was *Selina’s* sister. She should be nicest to *her.*

Selina would walk away. Behind her, whispers: *”That’s her sister? She’s gorgeous.”**”Like a doll.”**”Those eyes. That skin.”*

She never heard her sister’s reply.

At the end of the hall, Selina would throw the strawberry candy in the trash.

As they got older, Selina realized she was prettier than her sister. Her sister wasn’t ugly. She was even pretty. But Selina was *perfect*. Every feature. No bad angles.

That *superiority* made her stand out.

In any group, people saw her first.

People who saw her sister first seemed disappointed – *oh, there’s another one.*

Selina loved that.

Because comparison made the difference clear,

Every time, Selina thought: *She must be so miserable. Being compared to me. Outshone by me. Having everything taken by me.*

In high school, boys gathered around her sister. Lady Winfeld’s eldest daughter, pretty and kind. But they always switched their attention to Selina.

*Whatever.**They’re idiots.* If they spent more time with her sister, they’d realize she was *smarter*, more charming. But they didn’t have the patience. They only saw faces.

Selina almost felt sorry for her sister. *Poor thing. She’s so good to everyone. And everyone still likes me better.*

Late at night, Selina would wonder: *She must hate me. She must be so jealous.*

The thought made her smile.

Then there was the siren. Tall. Striking.

She remembered him. Her sister had saved a half-dead siren pup once, years ago. Selina had screamed at her: *”Get away from it! Are you crazy?!”* Her sister had ignored her and nursed it back to health.

Her sister probably didn’t even remember.

But Selina did.

So when she found him again, she brought him home. She knew why he came – he could smell her

sister’s scent in the manor. Faint. Warm. Like sun-dried sheets.

Selina thought, maliciously: *Come to repay a debt? Too bad she doesn’t remember you.*

Lorian wasn’t like other men. He didn’t like her at all. And the more he didn’t like her, the more she

wanted him.

It didn’t work.

Then her sister called. Wanting to trade.

Selina agreed without thinking. *Let the damn siren see how fickle his precious Evelyn is.*

And it worked. The three wolfens liked her right away.

But what Selina didn’t expect – her sister *didn’t* remember Lorian. But she was still *nice* to him. A glass of water when he woke up. A “want anything from the store?” when she went out. A new shirt when she got paid.

Small, unthinking kindnesses. More irritating than any grand gesture.

Why? After so many wounds – why wouldn’t she stop being so damn *nice*? A dying siren. Abandoned pups. Why did she keep *saving* things?

Selina waited for her sister to break. The arranged marriage. The horrible husband. *Surely she’ll come to me. Beg me for help. Like she used to come to me for everything.*

It was her sister’s smartest move – leaning on her *sister*. Not throwing kindness at strangers.

Selina waited.

And waited.

Then she realized – she’d been played.
