He Turned Our Wedding Into a Bet So I Married Another Man Chapter 05

The sunlight hit my face as I stepped out of the hotel.

I looked up at the blue sky and felt something inside me finally settle.

The seven-year dream had ended.

That night, I came home to Chase waiting on the couch.

I blinked. “What are you doing here?”

His brows were drawn together, his voice tight. He was barely holding it together.

“The hotel said you didn’t cancel-you postponed it to the day after tomorrow?”

Oh. That.

I kicked off my shoes. “Yeah. But I already transferred the deposit to your account.”

He made a visible effort to hold back, but then the dam broke.

“Can’t you wait three years?”

“Quinn, is your entire life just about marrying me? Are you that desperate to get hitched?”

He stood and walked over to me.

“The guys take this luck thing seriously, you know that. Nothing’s gone wrong at the company yet, but if it does, they’ll blame us for breaking the bet.”

“I’ve been smoothing things over for you for years, you have no idea what I’ve had to manage to keep everyone happy. All I’m asking is a little understanding.”

He turned and headed for the door.

“Don’t bother with the hotel again, I’m not answering. Cancel it. If there’s no groom, you’re the one who’ll be embarrassed.”

“Tomorrow I’m leaving for the auction with Lena and the guys. I’ll be back in a week. Use that time to calm

down.”

The door slammed.

I stood there, listening to his footsteps fade down the hall.

I walked to the keypad lock and changed the code from our anniversary to my own birthday.

The next morning, Chase called.

“Quinn, I’m at the airport. Boarding in an hour. Do you want to… see me off?”

I’d always picked him up and dropped him off, rain or shine.

“Can’t. Busy today.”

He paused, his tone softening. “I was wound up yesterday. Some of that stuff I said-don’t take it to heart. I

promise, by the time you’re thirty, I’ll give you the best wedding ever.”

“What if Lena makes another bet that day?”

A long silence.

Then, irritation creeping in. “Quinn, you’re still hung up on that.”

“I’m not hung up. I’m just saying, if a bet matters more than a promise, don’t make promises in the first

place.”

Another long silence.

I said softly, “Chase.”

“Yeah?”

In the background, the jet engines whined.

I smiled and said, “Thank you. For these seven years.”

He sounded confused. “What did you say?”

“Nothing.” I spoke into the phone. “Have a good trip.”

“Yeah.” A pause, something cautious in his voice. “Quinn, don’t worry, I won’t-”

Lena’s voice cut through. “Chase, come grab your ticket!”

I ended the call.

Then I opened his family group chat and left. The notification would tell him soon enough. I didn’t care.

Grant called.

“I’m downstairs.” His voice was low and warm. “Wedding’s tomorrow, time for your dress fitting.”

“On my way.”

I grabbed my bag and walked out.
