The Intern Sat Beside Him, So I Took Everything in the Divorce Chapter 01

I never worried about other women circling my fiancé. Everyone in our circles knew my reputation, and no one was stupid enough to test it.

But when I came back from six months abroad for executive training, I walked into the office just in time to see a young girl sitting in the passenger seat of Trevor Fulton’s car.

I didn’t confront them on the spot. I had my assistant set up a dinner with Trevor and all his key people.

Here’s the thing—a man who doesn’t know his place isn’t worth keeping.

And anyone who dares to come for my man, or even just thinks about it? I squash them.

“Ms. Hayes, seven of Mr. Fulton’s people are already here, but there’s one extra … not on the list.”

Natalie lowered her voice, her eyes flicking toward the private dining room.

“Who?”

I slipped my phone into my bag and gestured for her to lead the way.

“The one from the passenger seat.”

I laughed quietly and didn’t respond. I’d expected it.

The long table seated seven or eight people. Everyone shot to their feet the second I walked in.

Trevor sat at the head. He froze when he saw me, then slid over one seat without a word.

The girl next to him looked about twenty-two, carefully made up but dressed simply.

No one at the table dared make a sound. The tension was thick enough to cut.

But the girl either didn’t notice or didn’t care. She picked up Trevor’s glass and took a sip, then grinned up at him.

“Mr. Fulton, you’re not eating again? No way—I’m watching you.”

I stayed by the door. The awkward energy finally registered, and she turned to look at me.

She tilted her head, took in the frozen room, then turned back to Trevor.

“Who’s this? Shows up late without even saying hi. Mr. Fulton, aren’t our company rules a little too loose?”

When no one answered, she kept going, her voice all innocent confidence.

“She’s a director, sure, but basic manners still count, right? Guess Mr. Fulton spoils everyone—makes these dinners feel so stiff.”

Trevor’s assistant went green. He couldn’t hold it in anymore and tugged her sleeve.

“Ms. Vance, this is Scarlett Hayes, Ms. Hayes. She’s Mr. Fulton’s fiancée and … the actual head of the group.”

The room went dead quiet.

Mirabel Vance’s hand froze mid-air, the glass still in her grip. Her smile slowly curdled.

She set the glass down and, before Trevor could speak, said, “Oh, fiancée. Then you should’ve come earlier—everyone’s been waiting.”

I took the head seat and fixed my eyes on Trevor.

“Trevor, your intern is quite something.”

He finally looked at me, his expression cold.

“She doesn’t know better. Don’t bother with her.”

“When have I ever bothered with someone who doesn’t know better?”

I flipped open the menu.

“Get rid of your car. Trade it in for a new one.”

His brow furrowed. “What?”

“Someone else sat in the passenger seat. I don’t want it anymore.”

Mirabel muttered something under her breath. I didn’t catch it, and I didn’t need to.

“Also.” I closed the menu and looked at him. “She’s out tomorrow. You personally call every partner we have and make it clear she’s done—blacklisted, no exceptions.”

Mirabel’s face finally changed. She jerked her head up at me.

“Who do you think you are?”

“I’m Scarlett Hayes.”

Trevor’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing.

Everyone at the table exhaled.

I stood up and patted Trevor on the shoulder. “Trevor, you’d better think long and hard about why you have what you have today.”

His voice came from behind me, thick with barely suppressed anger. “Scarlett, do you have to be this ruthless?”

“Ruthless?” I pushed open the door, and the hallway breeze rushed in. “Guess you still don’t know me well enough.”
