all my strength.

“Alaric, we haven’t had a home for a long, long time.”

His face was pale, but he stubbornly reached for me again.

“Elodie, come back with me. Everything can go back to the way it was…”

I looked at him.

“Alaric, if I had confronted Chloe that day, would you have beaten Leo to death in front of me, and then killed me, too?”

His pupils contracted. His lips moved, but

no sound came out.

Alaric’s whole body shuddered.

He looked down at his ruined palm, then back up at me, his eyes wide with disbelief.

“You destroyed one of my hands. I’m returning the favor.”

“Now, we’re even. From this moment on,

we don’t owe each other a thing.”

“Elodie! Don’t go…” He tried to come after me, his voice a raw,

desperate sound, like a trapped animal.

I didn’t look back.

Two years later, on an ordinary afternoon in Paris, I saw Chloe.

She was a little thinner than before, holding the hand of a small girl who looked to be about two or three.

The child stared up at me with wide,

curious eyes.

“I came here to finish my studies,” Chloe said. “I never finished my degree.”

When she spoke, the timidity was gone, replaced by a quiet sense of peace.

I smiled and nodded to her and the child.

All of that was in the past.

We had both started new lives.
