Rebirth in Canaan, No Looking Back Chapter 10

She was back?

Of course she was.

Where else could she possibly go?

Knowing Elodie’s temper, if she came back in secret, it wasn’t to surrender.

If she was back, she was probably still after Chloe.

His eyes went cold. He strode across the room and threw open the bedroom door.

The neon glow from outside illuminated a slender figure with her back to him.

Alaric’s expression hardened instantly.

“Who let you in here?”

Chloe jumped, startled. She was pinching a delicate, fake nail between her fingers, her hand trembling.

“Alaric…” she said softly. “I just wanted to look around.”

“The guards at the door said no one lived

here. Please don’t blame them…”

Alaric’s gaze fell to the nail in her hand.

Elodie had designed it herself.

It was as thin as paper, but a layer of sharpened metal was hidden inside, capable of slicing skin.

And it wasn’t just the nail.

Elodie’s earrings, her hairpins, even one of her lipsticks-they all concealed some small, deadly mechanism.

Her title, the Queen of the Tables, was never just about winning money.

He looked at Chloe’s anxious eyes, and the anger inside him suddenly dissipated.

He walked over and gently pulled her into his arms.

“I’m not blaming you. This was my ex-wife’s room.”

“She’s gone now.

“If you like these things, I’ll have new ones made for you.”

Chloe looked up at him, her eyes a little

red.

She felt a wave of reassurance. She hadn’t misjudged him.

A man who could be sentimental about the past while caring for the present would surely make a good husband.

And a good father.
