The Rusty Spoon was just off campus, so we walked. Derek, a broadcasting major with a sharp, funny way with words, kept us laughing the whole way with his impressions of the coaches.

Landon and Kendra ended up tagging along too. Kendra had been looking forward to their first real date and didn’t want to crash a group dinner, but Landon said it would be rude to skip a team dinner hosted by a senior.

She had no choice but to tag along, clearly sulky the whole way. She trailed behind, fuming, occasionally shooting daggers at me.

When we got there, Brady Hartwell had rented out the whole place. Six or seven tables crammed with swimmers, their friends, and random hangers-on. Only one table had empty seats—right next to Landon’s crew.

“Hey, Piper!” they called out. “Hey, there she is! We were waiting for our girl…”

Derek cut them off. “Easy there. Wrong girl, guys. That’s my girlfriend.” He pointed at Kendra holding Landon’s hand.

Awkward silence. Landon’s roommates exchanged glances.

Derek didn’t let the awkwardness linger for a second. He pulled out chairs for us, then tapped the empty seat next to mine. “Save my spot. I gotta take a call.”

He looked like he had something urgent to attend to, and bolted off before I could even say yes. I dropped my Gatorade on the seat to mark it.

When I looked up, there they were—Landon and Kendra, sitting directly across from me. Inescapable. That was the only word in my head.

Kendra tried to introduce herself to his friends. They just nodded, cooler than they’d ever been with me.

She shot me another death glare. Like it was my fault she’d coached me to buy their loyalty with snacks and drinks.
