He Said I Was Slow to Commit While He Was Slow to Tell Me About Her Chapter 12

I stirred my drink without looking up.

“But he hasn’t been doing well lately,” Stella continued. “You blocked him, and he can’t reach your parents either. He’s been a wreck.”

She paused.

“He told me you’re insisting on getting married on the eighteenth and that it’s suffocating him.”

I stopped stirring.

“He said you were never the type to rush. He doesn’t understand why you’re suddenly so fixed on

that date.”

“Stella.”

I looked up.

She stopped.

“What do you like about Garrett?”

The question caught her off guard.

“He’s… dependable. He remembers the things that matter to me. He…”

“He remembers you like dried mango. He remembers you drink hot Americanos. He remembers that one time in college when you passed a bakery and said their croissants were good.”

My voice stayed calm.

“Everything you like about him, I liked once too.”

Her fingers tightened around her cup.

I took a sip of my drink.

“But after loving someone long enough, you start to notice something. He can remember everyone else’s preferences. The one thing he never seems to remember is what he cannot give you.”

I stood.

“I’m not telling you this so you’ll back off. Go ahead. Try being together. I won’t stand in your way.’

I looked at her.

“Just don’t tell me to stop pressuring him. For eight years, I was the one person who never did.”
