Reincarnation Failed, I Became A Cat To Save The True Heiress Chapter 03

Julian’s mask slipped.

Something ugly flickered behind his eyes, and he whipped around on Martha.

“Martha! What are you waiting for?”

“Get this garbage out of here. Now!”

Martha flinched, gripped the cart handles until her knuckles went white, and bolted for the door.

“Stop!” Serena threw the blanket off.

Her body still ached from delivery, faint staining on her hospital gown, yet she paid it no mind.

“I said stop! Did you not hear me?”

Martha froze mid-step. The cart stopped in the doorway.

Julian was at her side in a second, gripping her shoulders.

“Serena! Have you lost your mind?”

“You just delivered. You’re going to tear your stitches!”

He pinned her down with one arm and shot the guards a look over her shoulder.

“The cat’s out of control. Get a net! Get it sedated now!”

Two guards came back with a net and closed in from both sides.

I dropped low, hackles raised, snarling.

[Come closer. See what happens to your face.]

The net dropped. It pinned me flat.

They cinched it tight, and the ropes dug into my skin.

In the chaos, I saw it.

Martha, with her back to Serena, was rummaging frantically inside the bag.

She pulled something small and limp from the plastic and slid it into a hidden compartment beneath the cart.

Serena shoved Julian off and staggered toward the bag.

Her hands shook as she ripped it wide open.

It was empty.

Only crumpled medical gauze marked with faint red stains.

Serena’s hands went slack.

Julian let out a long breath. The relief lasted half a second before he covered it with tender concern.

He came up behind her and wrapped an arm around her.

“See? There’s nothing there.”

“Just gauze and blood. That’s it.”

“You’re exhausted, babe. Your hormones are all over the place. Your mind is playing tricks on you.”

Serena stared at the bloody gauze scattered on the floor. Her gaze drifted.

Had she imagined the cry?

In the nanny’s arms, the imposter let out a tiny giggle.

[Hahaha! What an idiot! They’ve got her chasing ghosts!]

[Once that brat suffocates in there, every last piece of this family’s fortune is mine!]

Every word made my blood boil.

[Serena! Don’t stop! The baby’s in the compartment under the cart!]

[She’s suffocating! Check the bottom of the cart!]

I threw myself wildly against the net, thin red scrapes breaking out across my muzzle, but Serena couldn’t hear me. She would never hear me.

Julian watched me thrash and didn’t blink.

“Serena, the cat needs to go. Send it to the animal hospital.”

“Where’s the doctor? Get my wife a sedative. She needs to sleep.”

A nurse stepped forward carrying a medical tray holding a mild calming injection meant for exhausted new mothers, her hands shaking.

Serena didn’t move. Didn’t fight it.

The needle was an inch from her skin.

A tall figure filled the doorway, cold authority rolling off him, and walked in like he owned the place.

“Julian. What do you think you’re doing?”

Alistair Sterling. Serena’s brother. The one who really ran the family.

His eyes swept the room and landed on me: bloodied, tangled in the net, still snarling.

His jaw tightened. He crossed the room in two strides and kicked the guard holding the net off his feet.

“Who told you to put your hands on my sister’s cat?”

Julian went pale and hurried toward him.

“Alistair… you’ve got it wrong. The cat just snapped…”

“Shut up.”

He didn’t look at Julian. He walked past him like he didn’t exist, shrugged off his jacket, and draped it over Serena’s shoulders.

Then he looked at me. His voice was low and steady.

“I believe the cat.”
