He Took His Childhood Friend to the World Cup, Leaving Me With Their Cat Chapter 07

Barrett immediately jumped online to book a ticket to Sloane’s hometown.

He was too panicked to even wait for tomorrow’s flights.

He just bought a ticket for the 8 PM Amtrak train tonight.

Chloe intercepted him right outside the door, her eyes red from crying.

“Why are you going after her?!”

“She’s my wife! Who else would I look for?!” Barrett snapped, completely out of patience.

“You guys aren’t married! She isn’t your wife!”

“She stayed by my side for twelve years. In my heart, Sloane is my wife!” Barrett yelled, every single word

laced with absolute certainty.

Chloe grew even more hysterical.

“How can you still want to be with someone like that?!”

“She’s pure evil! She starved a cat to death today, and she’ll probably kill you

tomorrow!”

“You keep saying Sloane gave you twelve years, but I’ve been with you for thirty!”

Barrett hesitated for a fraction of a second.

“It must be a misunderstanding. Sloane isn’t that kind of person.”

“The reality is my cat died because of her! She’s utterly irresponsible!”

Mrs. Sterling walked in, her face set in a hard, dark stare as she stepped up next to Chloe.

“Anyone with a shred of decency wouldn’t let a poor animal starve to death just because of an argument.”

“If she didn’t want to look after it, she could’ve just said so. A pet is a life. How could shebe so ruthless?”

Barrett tried to argue. “I checked the security footage. Sloane didn’t kill the cat. It starved.”

“And that means she starved it! Why didn’t she leave enough food before she walked out?”

“Even if she didn’t want to watch it, she could’ve handed it off to someone else. Stop defending her!”

Barrett’s chest burned with a furious anxiety, leaving him with zero desire to explain further.

He pushed past them toward the exit. “We’re talking in circles. Just drop it.”

Mrs. Sterling blocked his path, her stance unyielding.

“I am not letting you go find Sloane.”

“If she wanted to break up, it means she finally made the right choice.”

“You two were together for twelve years, and I opposed it from the very beginning. You refused to listen, so I let it go.”

“But you’re both thirty now! It’s time to settle down!”

“Chloe has stayed by your side all these years without asking for a title or a ring, don’t you see that?!”

“Chloe is the one who actually fits into your life, not Sloane.”

“Sloane is gone, and she isn’t coming back. I’m a woman too, Barrett, and I understand exactly how she feels.”

“In the twelve years you spent with her, you always kept Chloe around. Anyone with eyes could see what kind of dynamic you two really had.”

“Besides, Sloane went over to Chloe’s place before she left.”

“Your clothes were there. Your little memories were all over the place.”

“She saw everything she needed to see, and plenty of things she shouldn’t have.”

“When a woman leaves that quietly, without a single scream or fight, it means she’s entirely done with

you.”

“Barrett, do you even love her?”

Before Barrett could answer, Mrs. Sterling cut him off.

“Maybe you do, but not enough. Because you always kept a spot open for Chloe in your heart.”

“No woman can tolerate the man she loves keeping another woman in his soul.”

“Three World Cups in twelve years, and you chose Chloe every single time. That proves Chloe matters more to you than Sloane ever did.”

“No, that’s not true!” Barrett shot back, his eyes flashing red as panic seized him. “I was just used to watching the games with Chloe. Sloane was always the one I wanted to marry.”
