“Are you out of your mind?!”

Dad roared back. “I came here with you!”

Mom shot back, “Then why would she sell the pack house behind my back?”

“Were you trying to pocket that seven million for your little brat?”

“Bullshit!”

He jabbed a finger right under her nose. “I was about to say the same thing! You’ve had your eye on this pack house for your stepdaughter, haven’t you?”

“This pack house belongs to the Silver Moon Pack. None of this concerns you or that brat of yours!”

They sat on the dusty staircase, screaming at each other.

They fought about everything-from the moment they broke their mate bond to right now. Words

that cut deep.

But the daughter they once aimed their anger at was gone.

Exhausted, Mom caught her breath. Then she remembered-she called Darius.

The call connected quickly. Noisy background.

“Madam?”

Her voice was shaky, desperate.

“Darius! Please-has Kaia come to you? Where is she?”

A beat of silence. Then, low and pained.

“Madam… she hasn’t come to me.”

“I just found out from the academy mentors today. She’s the one who got into the Royal Lycan Academy. Top of her class.”

“I tried to send her a crystal message. She’d severed my link entirely.”

“Top of her class?!”

Mom and Dad shouted in unison.

The number hit them like a sledgehammer.

Mom pressed on, frantic. “So where did she go?!”

“South Coast Royal Lycan Academy.”

Darius’s voice was hollow.

“She said she didn’t want to stay in this city anymore.”

“I told her she had family and friends in the North. She didn’t respond.”

“She’d mentioned the South before. With her grades, she probably got a full scholarship.”

“She’s not coming back.”

“Hundreds of miles between North and South. She’d made her choice, and she wasn’t coming

back.”

Just then, Jane walked by with a bag of old books.

She spotted the two of them, crouched and disheveled, and sighed.

“Kaia’s parents… why are you sitting here?”

“I was going to thank you for your daughter. That girl’s so generous-she stopped by my pack house yesterday and left her full set of mistake logs and study notes for my grandson, told him to keep working hard.”

“Such a good pup. She left quietly, without even saying goodbye to any of us.”

Before Jane could finish, a muffled sob cut through the air.

Mom covered her face. Tears spilled through her fingers.

Dad hunched over, both hands tearing at his hair.

They finally understood.

The girl they’d tossed back and forth like an unwanted ball, the one they’d consigned to the shadows, was gone.

And this time, she wasn’t looking back.

For the first time, they were the ones who’d been left behind.
