The Last Time He Touched Me Chapter 06

It is Damien.

After calming Lindsey down, he drags me to a quieter corner.

I stand in front of him. He looks down at me, sharp brows pressed low, his voice cold enough to cut.

“Did I not tell you to stay away from her?”

“Kristen, I already warned you. It is over between us. Stop indulging in unrealistic fantasies.”

My eyes turn red.

“Are you blind? She came to me first.”

“And Don Grimholt,” I snap, voice trembling, “relax. To me, you are already the past.

When he sees the redness at the corners of my eyes, he freezes for a brief second.

I pull my wrist free from his grip, tears gathering as I force out a smile.

“Congratulations on your engagement. And please, stop haunting me like a ghost.”

After that, I throw myself fully into work handover.

Damien occasionally comes to the station to pick Lindsey up from work, and we inevitably run into each

other sometimes.

One day, when Kyle comes to invite me to dinner, he even brings flowers.

To be honest, I do not intend to develop anything serious with Kyle, even though my parents think he is a

good match.

But after spending time with him, I still do not feel like dating him.

With colleagues watching, I accept the flowers to avoid embarrassment.

I plan to clear things up with him at dinner.

Unfortunately, my coworkers start teasing immediately.

“Kristen, if this works out, you have to treat us to dinner!”

“Wishing you both happiness!”

At that moment, Lindsey appears, holding onto Damien’s arm as they step out of the elevator.

His gaze lands directly on the bouquet in my hands, then moves away just as quickly.

Kyle, noticing Damien, excitedly walks over to greet him.

Damien does not respond. Not even a polite nod. He walks straight past without looking at him.

On the day before my resignation, at 11 p.m., a fire breaks out in an old apartment building in downtown

Boston.

The news reaches the station as I am about to leave.

The on-duty editor rushes into the office face pale.

“There is a fire in the old district. It is spreading fast. Firefighters are already on site. The station wants someone on scene immediately.”

Silence falls over the room.

“I will go.”

My voice comes out steadier than I expect.

“I have experience.”

I stand up and grab my press badge.

“A few years ago, I covered the chemical plant explosion. I can handle this.”

The editor looks at me for a moment, then nods.

“Be careful.”

As I walk through the hallway, quick footsteps approach behind me.

Lindsey catches up in her heels.

“Wait. I am going too.”

I frown.

“Why are you going?”

“I am the program lead. Why would I not cover a major breaking story?”

I do not bother arguing and keep walking.

At the scene, the fire is far worse than expected.

A six-story residential building is swallowed in thick black smoke. Flames burst from the third floor windows, licking at the night sky.

The air is heavy with the smell of burning debris. Sirens pierce through the darkness.

The camera operator turns on the live feed. The red light flickers on.

Lindsey and I split responsibilities. She reports from the perimeter while I move closer with the camera crew to capture rescue footage.

“I am now at the southeast side of the building. Firefighters are actively working on rescue operations. Several trapped residents have already been carried

Before I can finish, a wall suddenly cracks.

A deafening crash follows as bricks and debris fall. Dust fills my lungs.

I am trapped in a narrow gap. My legs cannot move. Not far away, Lindsey is on the ground, clutching her leg and screaming.

Fire advances from the left. Smoke builds like a wall.

I cough violently, eyes burning, throat completely closed off. I cannot even make a sound.

Then, through the blaze, someone rushes inside.

It is Damien.

For a split second, something in me surges to life. My heart feels like it is about to break through my chest.

But the next moment, Damien bends down and lifts Lindsey from the ground.

His movements are urgent, but careful.

“Damien… I am scared… my leg…”

Lindsey clings to his neck, sobbing uncontrollably.

“Don’t be afraid. I am here.”

He turns to leave with her in his arms.

I am only a few meters away.

A beam presses down on my legs. Smoke chokes my throat. I try desperately to call out.

“Dam-”

Damien suddenly stops.

He looks around the burning space, but does not see me.

As if sensing something, he lowers his voice and asks the woman in his arms,

“Is there anyone else trapped?”
