The Childless Sky Chapter 06

He tried to stir the pot once more.

“Looks like he’s cut you off. Chasing after a guy who ducks responsibility like that… What’s the point? Even if you get him back now, he’s just going to keep giving you the cold shoulder.”

This time, Hannah did not just go along with Jack’s words like she always did. Instead, she paused, deep in thought, a rare sight that sent Jack into a panic.

His previous attempts at driving a wedge had been simple but effective, all thanks to Hannah’s favoritism towards him. Sensing that favoritism was fading, he stopped short, afraid to say more.

Jack watched Hannah, who was squatting down, looking lost. After a moment’s thought, he hatched a new plan, deciding to back off to gain ground.

“Hannah, what if we do this? If we can’t reach him by phone, let’s just go to the hospital and find him. Some things just don’t come across right in a call; it’s better to talk it out in person.”

Hearing that, Hannah jumped up.

“You’re right, Jack! He must have sent those messages in a fit of anger. We need to get to the hospital and clear things up!”

Hearing her talk to him so warmly made him secretly sigh with relief. He played it cool. “Which hospital are they at? I’ll drive you over right now.”

However, at that question, Hannah’s face tensed, and she frowned slightly. It hit her then: she had never bothered to ask which hospital my grandfather was in.

“I… I’m not sure…” she stammered, her face betraying her discomfort. “Jack, did I mess up for real?”

Jack, who had just begun to relax, felt a knot tighten in his chest.

An ominous hunch crept over him, and he forced a smile, reaching out to clasp Hannah’s delicate hand.

“Hannah, we all have our limits. You’ve been so caught up in my sickness, it’s natural to miss a thing or two. Don’t beat yourself up over it.”

He spoke with a gentle reassurance, “And hey, there aren’t that many big hospitals in town. We’ll check them one by one until we find what we’re looking for.”

Usually, his touch and tender words were enough to soothe her. However, not this time. Before he could finish, Hannah jerked her hand away and stepped back.

“Fine, we’ll do it your way and start searching now.”

She offered a weak smile. “I’m sorry, you’re ill and still have to deal with all this… I always jump headfirst into things, messing up my own stuff, and now the home front too…”

Seeing her like that, Jack’s worry deepened.

He began to regret suggesting whatever harebrained scheme had just crossed his mind.

Since I had come clean with Hannah, I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

Now, sitting by the hospital bed, the insomnia that had plagued me seemed to give way to a rare drowsiness.

I slept more soundly than I had in days, as if I had finally shaken off the heavy cloak of stress and worry.

However, then, the clamor from the hallway jolted me awake.

Grandpa was frowning in his sleep on the bed. I shot up and flung the door open. “Could you keep it down? My grandpa needs his rest.”
