I Walked Away From His Regret Chapter 01

I Walked Away From His Regret Chapter 01

When he learned I’d had a miscarriage, Edward Lawrence flew back overnight from Europe.

He stopped giving me the cold shoulder all the time, and stopped mentioning Queenie Laird so carelessly.

He even started checking in with me every day, even though this was the thing he hated most before.

But I could barely avoid him fast enough.

That night, I made an excuse about working overtime and went with a friend to a restaurant I’d been looking forward to for ages.

While we ate, my friend noticed I’d glanced over at the little girl at the next table several times, and asked casually.

“Aren’t you planning to have another baby?”

I shook my head.

“Forget it.

“After all, Edward and I… we might get divorced soon anyway.”

I turned my head, and saw Edward standing in the doorway, his face dark with anger.

He pressed his lips into a straight line and stared at me with no expression.

“It’s raining. I came to drive you home.”

I stood up awkwardly, grabbed my bag, and walked toward the door.

He kept a cold scowl on his face the entire time I got in the car.

Halfway through the drive, he said suddenly, “I never wanted to divorce you.

“What I said that day at the restaurant, that was all just angry words.”

It snowed heavily on New Year’s Eve.

Edward had a last-minute business trip. I begged him over and over, and he finally agreed to stay for New Year’s Eve dinner before leaving.

He booked the restaurant. I left work early and rushed over, only to run into Edward and Queenie getting out of a cab right at the entrance.

I froze.

Edward walked a few steps inside. When he saw I wasn’t moving, he turned back and asked, “Why aren’t you coming in?”

I fixed my gaze on Queenie behind him. “Why is she here too?”

Queenie stiffened at the question.

Edward furrowed his brow and explained, “Queenie and I are heading to the airport together right after this. It’s just easier to eat together.”

I pressed my lips together. “I don’t think it’s convenient. Ask her to eat somewhere else by herself.”

Edward’s face grew colder.

“Sheryl, don’t make a scene. It’s just one meal.”

It was always “just”. Always “it’s just”.

I’d been dying to see a certain stage play for ages. He pulled strings to get tickets, but only after we sat down did I see Queenie sitting right next to him.

He said Queenie happened to want to see it too, so he got an extra ticket.

I asked him back then, “Why does she have to sit with us? Can’t she sit somewhere else?”

“The friend who got us the tickets didn’t think about it,” he said. “Sheryl, it’s just one play.”

I’d wanted a DP necklace for ages. He had one custom-made as my birthday gift, but I saw an identical one around Queenie’s neck.

I pointed at her and asked Edward why.

Edward said, “You have such good taste, I had them make an extra one.”

Queenie lowered her head, smiled awkwardly, and said to me. “If you don’t like wearing the same one as me, I’ll just take it off.”

She lifted her hand to unclasp it as she spoke.

Edward stopped her. “It’s just a necklace. Sheryl isn’t that petty. Right?”

I went cold-faced, and I never wore that necklace again.

Two months ago, Edward and I had planned a camping trip to watch a meteor shower. I opened the passenger door, and there was Queenie, already sitting inside.

For a split second, my breath almost stopped. I turned to Edward and asked, “Why is she here too?”

Edward didn’t understand why I was upset. He acted like I was being unreasonable.

“Sheryl, it’s just watching a meteor shower.”

We stood there in a standoff, and his face got colder and colder.

Finally he said, “If you don’t want to go anymore, you can go home by yourself.”

That day I suddenly understood what the name of his first love, which his friends had always been so vague about, meant to him.

They’d known each other for ten years, dated for five, and broken up three years earlier.

I finally understood what that meant to him.

It was the way he couldn’t stop staring when he saw her again after she came back to the country.

It was the way he always listened fully when Queenie talked to him, the soft smile at the corner of his mouth that he didn’t even notice himself.

My breathing shook.

I still said stubbornly to Edward, “New Year’s Eve, I just want to spend it alone with you.

“Ask her to leave, okay?”

Edward was silent for a moment, then said to me, “Sheryl, it’s just New Year’s Eve. There’s nothing special about it. Don’t be so dramatic.

“And actually, I’m going to spend the night on the plane with Queenie anyway.”

I froze completely.

I exhaled very slowly, then asked quietly.

“She loves inserting herself into our business so much. Does that mean she’s gonna sleep between us in bed someday too?”

“Sheryl Quinn!” Edward cut me off sharply.

Queenie’s face went dead white in an instant.

Edward frowned hard, his face turning completely cold. “How did you get so petty and sharp-tongued now?

“I won’t hold what you said today against you, but if there’s a next time…

“Sheryl, maybe we should just get divorced.”
