The Fortune Teller Said I Was Bad Luck, I Brought Them Worse Chapter 02

I hung up and sat on the floor for ten minutes.

Then I got up, washed my face, and changed. In the mirror, my eyes were red and swollen, my face pale. I put on makeup, carefully—eyeliner precise, lipstick a bold red.

At 6:20 a.m., I called Mom.

“Hello? Isabella, why haven’t you come over yet? The hotel just called, they delivered the flowers and asked how to arrange them.” Her voice was husky from sleep, tinged with excitement.

“Mom… Gavin just called me.”

“Oh, that boy. He must be too nervous to sleep. You’re the older sister, try to comfort him. Today’s a big day…”

“He said his mother-in-law believes I might bring bad luck to the marriage and asked me not to come.”

Silence on the line.

I heard faint static, Mom’s halted breath, and Dad asking somewhere in the background, “Who’s that?”

“Mom?” I gripped the phone so hard my nails dug into my palm. “Did you hear that?”

“…I heard,” she said softly. “Isabella… this is awkward for Gavin too. You know his mother-in-law is very traditional and superstitious.”

“So?”

“So…” Mom paused, choosing her words carefully. “You’re the older sister. You want your brother to have a happy marriage, don’t you?”

I leaned against the bathroom door, looking at the woman in the mirror—perfect makeup, but eyes streaked with tears.

“Mom… I’m your daughter too.”

“I know, I know,” her voice softened, coaxing. “But today is his wedding day. Let’s not make it unpleasant. Go to the hotel, wait in the lounge during the ceremony, then come out afterward. Okay? I’ll save you the best seat, right by the head table.”

“You know I’m covering all the expenses?” I asked.

“I know. I know you care for your brother. After the wedding, I’ll thank you properly, okay?”

“No thanks needed,” I said. “I’m not going.”

“Oh, Isabella… why can’t you just behave…”

I hung up.

Then I put my phone on silent and tossed it on the bed. It lit up once, twice, three times—Mom, Dad, Gavin. I didn’t answer.
