Cruel Captive Experiment on My Anniversary Chapter 06 When the Lie Shatters

The assistant’s words struck Adrian like a physical blow.

He staggered back from Lydia’s bedside, bracing himself against the wall.

Memories flooded him.

In the early years. A leaking lab, rusted equipment, no funds for basic supplies. No one left to help.

No one but Serena. She came every day. Bringing him hot meals, wiping his brow with a quiet, steady grace.

“I believe you’ll make it,” she’d say, her eyes shining with a faith that felt like starlight.

She took side jobs to fund his work.

She’d come home with hands marked by cuts and fresh blisters.

When he fretted, she’d just smile. “It’s okay. Just a scratch.”

The day he got his first funding, she was more thrilled than he was.

She ran into the lab and nearly tripped on the doorstep. “I told you someone would see your worth!”

When their daughter was born, she lay weak in her hospital bed but insisted on checking his experiment

data.

“Don’t worry about me. Your work matters more.” Yet her eyes glistened with tears.

Those warm memories now cut into him like shards of glass.

“Adrian, don’t go.” Lydia’s voice was soft, pleading. She clutched his sleeve. “She’s just playing the victim, like always. This is another pathetic trick for your attention.”

That tone used to work-it used to sway him. But now, the word she used felt like poison. A wave of disgust left him dizzy.

He wrenched his arm from Lydia’s grasp.

“Didn’t you say the big-name sponsor was your connection? Now it’s gone-you fix it!”

His gaze swept the luxurious hospital suite, its sterile gleam a cruel contrast to the memory of her in that

shabby operating room, the doctor’s cold voice telling her organs were rotting…

“Adrian!” Lydia shrieked. “If you go to her, you’ll never see me again!”

He didn’t look back. Her screams chased him down the hall.

His hands trembled on the wheel, slick with sweat. Red lights, gridlock-cach delay a fresh torment. His heart hammered, forehead damp.

A sharp turn, a skid-metal shrieked as the car slammed into a guardrail. Blood trickled from his temple. He felt nothing.

Only one thought remained: Home.

He staggered through the door. The house stood silent. On the table lay a recorder and a stack of papers. Legs buckled, he crashed to his knees.

The papers scattered-her research authorization, and… the adoption papers. Proof her mother had taken in the orphaned Lydia.

His world splintered. It turned out he had built everything on a lie.

A trembling finger pressed ‘play. The recorder emitted a soft, final click.
