He Skipped Our Wedding License 10 Times but Married My Bestie Chapter 05

From those scattered, casual messages, the horrifying truth finally fell into place.

Derrick and Saylor were notorious players in Boston’s high-society circles.

One was a stunning, wealthy heiress, and the other was a reckless, charming playboy.

They had always claimed to despise each other, but in reality, they were secretly infatuated.

Saylor had made a bet with Derrick: if he could successfully win over the straight-A valedictorian- me-she would finally agree to be his girlfriend.

Derrick and I first crossed paths during our freshman year of high school when I gave a speech as the student representative, and he claimed it was love at first sight.

He had even intentionally held himself back a grade just to be in my class.

I had zero interest in dating, and even less interest in a textbook bad boy like him; my only goal was to study hard and escape my suffocating family.

But Derrick completely ignored my rejections, his pursuits only growing louder and more disruptive.

He would break school rules on purpose just so he could stand at the podium, look straight at me, and read his detention essays filled with blatant love letters.

Passing by my desk, he would flash a smirk. “Nevaeh, my love for you is always on full display.”

He kept that up every single day for three years, but I still refused to lose focus.

Until one night after evening study, when a gang from the rival school cornered me in an alley, and Derrick took a knife to the chest for me-an inch closer and he would have died.

I couldn’t comprehend how someone could risk their life for another person, and in that moment, my defenses crumbled.

For me, Derrick dyed his platinum hair black and sat quietly by my side in class, giving up his skipping habits.

If only I’d gotten into college…

I never imagined that the man I thought was my savior was actually the architect of all my misery.

If I had gone to college, my life wouldn’t be a broken, chaotic mess, arguing over pennies at a street market every day.

Derrick knew that higher education was my only way out, yet he deliberately tore it away from me.

Even these past five years together were nothing more than a meticulously planned game of

penance to him.

I scrubbed my digital footprints from his phone, packed my bags, and dropped a final message directly into his group chat with his trust-fund friends.

Nevaeh: [Hi everyone, this is Nevaeh. I’m glad you’re all so deeply invested in my private life.]

Nevaeh: [First of all, having an intimate life between adults is entirely normal, and I feel zero shame about it. What’s actually pathetic is a bunch of guys gossiping and fantasizing about someone else’s girl behind her back.]

Nevaeh: [And to be perfectly honest, Derrick is incredibly mediocre in bed, and his endurance is nothing to write home about. I only made noise to save his fragile ego.]

Nevaeh: [It was exhausting, and if he hadn’t been trying so hard, I wouldn’t have even bothered to fake it.]

The chat exploded instantly.

Edward: [Wait, Nevaeh?]

Dylan: [Why the hell do you have Derrick’s phone?]

Luke: [Holy shit, Nevaeh? That’s her, isn’t it?]

Ignoring the chaos, I tagged Edward Diaz, the guy who had made the crude comment about wanting a turn with me.

Nevaeh: [I appreciate the interest, Mr. Diaz. You wanted a turn? Sure, if you aren’t afraid of looking even worse by comparison, feel free to try. Just a heads up, though, I have standards, and your little toothpick probably won’t make the cut.]

The group chat went dead silent.

I had thought about burning everything down with Derrick and Saylor, but I didn’t have the leverage.

To the ultra-wealthy, crushing someone like me was as effortless as stepping on a bug.

If I couldn’t fight them, I could at least disappear.

After finishing my packing, I smashed everything left in the apartment to pieces, cutting ties completely.

Better to suffer a sharp pain than a long one.

To hell with love; I didn’t need it anymore.

I grabbed my luggage and hailed a cab straight to the airport.

On the way, I popped out my SIM card and threw it out the window.

Before the plane climbed through the clouds, I compiled the group chat logs into a massive, detailed presentation and leaked it across every social media platform.

I was too weak to fight the Frost family head-on, but I could let the public ruin the reputations of the predators who played with people’s hearts.

From this moment on, Saylor and Derrick were nothing but ghosts in my past.

We were entirely even.
