He Skipped Our Wedding License 10 Times but Married My Bestie Chapter 04

Saylor didn’t care. She brushed past Derrick and ran straight up to me, full of excitement. “Nevaeh, we’re getting wasted tonight!”

Derrick stepped forward to intervene, but I shook my head at him.

His brow furrowed, and he mouthed silently, Drink less. It’s your period.

My chest tightened, leaving me suffocated by a sharp pang of pain as my eyes welled with tears.

I would have preferred it if he were completely fake, yet he still threw in these glimpses of genuine care.

That night, Saylor drank heavily, rambling about the promises we used to make.

“Nevaeh, didn’t we agree to marry brothers? That way, we’d never be apart. We could shop together by day and talk shit about our mothers-in-law by night.”

I glanced at her, and something bitter rose in my chest.

Well, we’d ended up with the same man.

That was even closer than marrying brothers, wasn’t it?

One drink after another, Saylor finally passed out.

She slumped against my lap, fast asleep, her flushed face looking adorable.

I reached out, my fingertips tracing her cheek down to her slender neck.

If I squeezed just a little, I could end her.

Why did the betrayal have to come from the two people I loved most in the world?

“Derrick, take her home.”

I called him over and pushed Saylor into his arms.

He raised an eyebrow in surprise, knowing exactly how much I treasured her as my best friend.

Usually, we acted like conjoined twins, so he didn’t expect me to send her away.

“Today is Saylor’s first day as Mrs. Frost,” I explained, forcing a casual tone. “It wouldn’t look right if I kept her here.”

Then, I added casually, “You know, Derrick, I hear your name sounds almost exactly like that Frost heir’s. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were playing some rich-guy game, pretending to be broke just to test my loyalty.”

I caught the panic flickering in Derrick’s eyes and flashed him a perfect smile. “Just kidding. Rich people aren’t that pathetic, right?”

“Yeah… right. You should lay off those romance novels. You’ll rot your brain.” His voice was flat, the cover-up painfully obvious.

Once they both left, the mask I had worn all day crumbled, and I collapsed onto the floor.

Then the vibration of a phone interrupted my thoughts.

It was Derrick’s phone.

On a whim, I picked it up and tried the passcode.

Saylor’s birthday—wrong.

Derrick’s birthday—still wrong.

I tried dozens of meaningful dates, but none worked.

Just as I was about to give up, my eyes landed on the photo on the wall, taken the day Derrick and I first got together.

Flattering myself, I typed in the date.

It worked.

I tapped on the latest group chat notifications, and my pupils blew wide.

[Gotta hand it to you, Derek. Playing broke with the innocent girl by day, and sleeping with the Chair heiress by night. Mad respect.]

[Please, if Derek hadn’t lost that bet to Miss Chair, that little thing wouldn’t even get to lick his toes.]

[To be fair, she’s wild in bed. When you get bored, toss her my way for a few days, yeah?]

Derrick: [Pathetic. You’d take my sloppy seconds?]

[Derek, don’t tell me you’ve actually fallen for her?]

Derrick didn’t reply to that.

[Hahaha, everyone knows Derek only loves Saylor. Back then, just because Saylor said she didn’t want to see that girl go to college, Derek spiked her water. That’s why she botched her SATs and almost had to marry some simpleton. Derek and Saylor are the real endgame!]

Derrick: [Keep your mouths shut. Don’t let any of this get to Nevaeh.]

My vision blurred as hot tears flooded my eyes. A suffocating, crushing pain seized my chest, and my limbs began to shake uncontrollably.

I gasped for air, tears flowing nonstop.
