He Pushed Me to Marry an Old Man, Then Cried When I Said Yes Chapter 08

Lucas walked out of the airport terminal with a dark expression.

I yanked my wrist free from Ethan and hurried toward Lucas.

Lucas pulled me into his arms, held me protectively, and patted my back in comfort. “Honey, are

you okay?

“I’m fine.” I shook my head.

Ethan’s gaze landed on Lucas, and he stared at him for a long time.

“It was you…”

Then, as if everything had finally clicked into place, shock and disbelief flashed across his face.

“So that braided cord bracelet really was made by Harper.” His voice trembled as he looked at the bracelet on Lucas’s wrist. “So the wife you mentioned last time really was Harper.”

“Harper…” He turned to me, his expression full of pain. “You didn’t marry Old Mr. Lancaster. You

married him?”

“Yes.” I took Lucas’s arm and nodded calmly. “This is my husband, Lucas Lancaster. He’s Old Mr.

Lancaster’s grandson.”

“Ethan, the Lancasters’ spiritual adviser said the family needed a bride in her twenties to turn their luck around. He never said she had to marry Old Mr Lancaster. A bride for his grandson works just

as well.”

“Lucas is a good man, and he treats me well. Thank you for arranging this marriage for me. I’m

very satisfied with it.”

Ethan listened in disbelief, his face blank. He stood there as if some invisible force had nailed him

to the ground.

Then, all at once, he laughed, bitter and broken.

“I’m such a fucking idiot. I’m the biggest idiot in the world.”

He covered his face, his voice ragged with misery pushed the woman I loved most into another man’s arms with my own hands. Ha. I destroyed the love of my life.”

“I’m the biggest fucking joke alive.”

Lucas shot him a look of disgust and called the security guards over coldly. “There’s a lunatic harassing my wife. Escort him out immediately.”

Ethan seemed completely numb. He let the guards drag him away without putting up any

resistance.

After Ethan was removed, the coldness in Lucas’s expression finally softened.

“I didn’t expect us to run into a lunatic on our first day back in the States.”

He brushed a strand of hair away from my ear, his voice gentle. “Harper, if that lunatic ever bothers

you again, tell me. I’ll get rid of him for you.”

“Okay.”

Looking at the warm, gentle man in front of me, I felt a flicker of warmth in my chest.

The truth was, Lucas and I had known each other for a long time.

He had been in my class in high school. We had never been especially close, but we had always

gotten along well.

After high school graduation, he went abroad for college, and we never saw each other again.

It was not until six months ago that I happened to hear from an old classmate that Lucas was

coming back to the States to get married.

The moment I heard Ethan say he planned to send me to the Lancasters in Vivian’s place, I understood that the person I was going to marry might be Lucas, not Old Mr. Lancaster.

Lucas was handsome, gentle, and from an extremely prominent family. If anything, I was the one

getting the better end of the deal.

On our wedding day, I was completely honest with him.

“Lucas, I had an ex-boyfriend. We grew up together, spent many years together, and went through a lot. I even donated a kidney to him. I don’t know if that bothers you.”

“It doesn’t.” Lucas cut me off. “Harper, since you’ve decided to marry me, I don’t mind your past, and I don’t care about it. What I care about is our future, and the decades we’re going to spend

together.”

“Harper, even though this is a family-arranged marriage, now that we’re together, I’ll honor you, and

I’ll honor our marriage.”

I leaned against him, my heart full.

“Lucas, since I chose you, I’ll say goodbye to my past completely. I’ll be faithful to you and to our

marriage.”
