A month ago.

The moment I fell from the sixth floor, I never actually hit the ground.

Wind howled past my ears.

I closed my eyes, thinking I could finally give Mom back her son-my brother.

But the next second, I landed in a cold, hard embrace.

The guy smelled strongly of pine, mixed with the scent of a rainy night and the wild.

I heard him murmur low, “Found you at last.”

I couldn’t open my eyes.

All I could register was how familiar that scent was

It reminded me of an injured black wolf I’d found by the roadside a long time ago.

I was so small back then.

It was my turn to play the part of my brother.

I had a buzz cut, wore clothes for a male pup, and shuck out of the house.

That was when I spotted the black wolf crumpled in the brush by the road.

His fur was soaked through from the rain, he breathed heavy, and deep gashes crisscrossed his

body.

I was terrified.

But I still crushed the only herbs I had in my pocket and pressed them to his wounds.

He couldn’t speak, just stared at me with a pair of golden eyes.

I crouched beside him and whispered, “Don’t be scared. My name is Rowan.”

Rowan was the name Mom had originally picked for my brother.

That whole week, Mom told me I was Rowan.

So I’d even believed that was what I was really supposed to be called.

Later, the black wolf was gone, and I never saw him again.

Not until the second I fell off that building.

He’d finally found me.

Only, he’d spent so long searching-

Because he’d been looking this whole time for a male pup named Rowan.

Right before I blacked out completely, I heard him tell the people beside him, “Wipe her scent. Alert

the witch-healer. Prep the decoy.

“As of right now, Wren Ashborne is dead.”

The “body” they left downstairs that day was a decoy crafted with shapeshifting magic.

It wore my clothes.

It carried my scent.

Even the nicked scalp was identical to mine.

When I woke up again, I was already lying in the Stormhowl Pack hospital.

The second I opened my eyes, I saw a tall man sitting by the bed.

Black hair.

Golden eyes.

A faint old scar cut across his brow bone.

When he saw I was awake, he immediately leaned down to check on me gentle.

I stared at him blankly.

“Who are you?”

He went quiet for a beat, then reached up to brush the stray hairs off my forehead.

His movement was so light, like he was scared he’d hurt me.

“I’m Cormac Greyvale, Alpha of the Stormhowl Pack.”

I stared into his eyes for a long time.

Suddenly I asked, “I think I remember you. Are you that black wolf from years ago?”

His gaze softened instantly.

“Yeah.

“You saved me a long time ago. I’ve been looking for you this whole time.

“But I got it wrong. I thought you were Rowan.”

I looked at him and whispered, “Are you going to send me back then?”

Cormac’s face hardened.

“No. From now on, you’re under the Stormhowl Pack’s protection.”

“I’ll keep you safe. I promise.”

For some reason, tears suddenly spilled down my face.

I grabbed the sleeve of his shirt and asked so quietly, “Then… can I call you Dad?”

Cormac froze. It took him a long time to reach out and pull me gently into his chest.

His voice was deep, but steady as a rock.

“Of course you can, baby girl.”

After that day, I stayed with the Stormhowl Pack.

As the real me-Wren.

Nessa bought me dresses, and also packed loose training gear for me.

She said, “You can wear whatever you want. You’re Wren, not anybody’s replacement.”

At first, I was still so awkward and slow.

If people talked even a little fast, I couldn’t follow.

During training, everyone else nailed a move after one look. I had to practice it over and over.

I was always scared I’d mess up.

Scared the Stormhowl Pack would also think I was useless reject.

But every single pack member, Cormac included, never once got impatient with me.

A month later, I was almost of age.

The night before my coming-of-age ceremony, a sharp, searing pain suddenly tore through my

body.

I toppled off the bed, curled up on the floor, and could barely breathe.

Hurried footsteps thundered down the hallway outside my door.

“Wren!”

Cormac burst in first.

He lifted me into his arms, his face ice-cold and terrifying.

“Send for the wolf-healers!

“No-send for all of them!”

Every light in the Stormhowl Pack hospital flipped on in minutes.

I lay on the hospital bed, my body alternating between burning hot and freezing cold.

All I could hear was the wolf-healers murmuring low to each other around me.

“She’s awakening.”

“But she’s not even at her full coming-of-age yet!”

“She was always diagnosed as wolfless-how can she suddenly have such a strong wolf scent?”

Dr. Elise stared at the double wolf silhouette slowly materializing behind me, her voice shaking so

bad it cracked.

“Alpha…

“She’s a rare twin-wolf lineage.

“There are two wolves inside her!”

I was never a monster.

I was a kid who grew up protected by two wolves all along.
