Mom froze for a second.

Then her face went completely white with rage.

She wrenched me over to her side and twisted my ear.

“You little brat, what did you tell the teacher?!”

Mom squeezed so hard her nails dug into my earlobe.

“I didn’t say anything! I didn’t say anything at all!” I screamed, crying.

“You still dare lie to me!” Mom wrenched harder.

“Ms. Ashborne!”

Ms. Maren hurried over and grabbed Mom’s wrist to stop her.

“How can you treat a child like this!”

Mom was pulled away, but her eyes still bored into me, murderous.

“Wren is such a sweet, quiet kid. She didn’t say a thing!”

Ms. Maren stepped between me and mom, shielding me.

“I just wanted to come over for a routine home visit. To learn more about your family situation.”

The teacher’s voice was calm, but unshakable.

Mom stared at Ms. Maren for a long time.

Then she suddenly smiled, a fake, tight smile.

“Oh, a home visit!

“Why didn’t you say so earlier? I thought the kid got in trouble at school.”

She stepped over and patted my head, hard enough to hit the cut.

I flinched from the pain.

“Then Ms. Maren, you’re more than welcome.

“Our place is a mess, please don’t judge.”

Mom said so, yanking my arm and dragging me toward home.

When we got in, Mom opened the door and Ms. Maren followed her inside.

When she saw how our house was set up, her brow furrowed.

Because everything I owned came in two sets.

One for a boy, one for a girl.

The most obvious were the two wardrobes against the wall.

One was painted pink, covered in princess stickers.

The other was painted blue, covered in car stickers.

Ms. Maren took a deep breath.

“Ms. Ashborne, don’t you only have Wren as your child?”

Mom laughed.

“Ms. Maren, this is my personal business. You just need to take care of Wren at school, that’s all.”

She said that, and shot me a sharp glare.

“Wren, go back to your room.”

I turned to leave.

“Wait.”

Ms. Maren called after me.

“Ms. Ashborne,”

The teacher turned back to Mom, her voice lowered, soft like she was talking to a stubborn kid.

“I’m only doing this for Wren’s sake.

“I’ve noticed for a long time that all the other kids bully her because her outfits are so strange.

“And she always has new bruises and cuts on her body.”

The teacher pulled up my sleeve, revealing my arm crisscrossed with bruises.

Some from Mom pinching me, some from the other kids shoving me around.

“Haven’t you noticed this?”

Ms. Maren’s tone was still gentle, but her eyes were sharp and serious.

Mom’s face shifted, from her fake smile to cold fury.

“Ms. Maren.” Mom’s voice was shaking.

“What do you know about any of this?”

Her voice got louder and louder, her words coming out in a frantic, jumbled mess.

“My parents died when I was little! I clawed my way into the Ironfang Pack, that took everything!

“I was carrying the next Alpha heir!

“But this useless thing—”

She pointed at me, her finger shaking so bad it looked like it would break.

“I’ve raised her all by myself! Worked my fingers to the bone to get her this big!

“Is that so easy for me? What did I do wrong?!”

Mom screamed, her face bright red, the veins on her neck sticking out.

I was shaking all over with fear. “Mom, you didn’t do anything wrong. It’s my fault, it’s all my fault!”

Mom glared at me, her eyes so red they looked almost black.

“That’s right! It’s all your fault! You’re the one who deserves to die!”

“Ms. Ashborne! Do you have any idea what you’re saying right now?”

Ms. Maren pulled me into her arms tight.

When Mom saw me in the teacher’s arms, she completely lost it.

She lunged forward to yank me away. “Who do you think you are? What right do you have to hold my kid!”

The teacher held me tight, her body shaking too.

“Ms. Ashborne, calm down. If you keep this up, I’m going to call Pack security.”

“Go ahead! Call them!” Mom screamed, sobbing. “Let them arrest me! I don’t care!”

Watching Mom cry felt like someone was stabbing my heart over and over.

I wriggled out of Ms. Maren’s arms and crawled to Mom’s feet.

“Mom.” I called her softly.

Mom looked down at me, her face streaked with tears.

“Mom, just let my brother eat me.

“I’m scared when you’re like this.”

Mom looked at me, stared for a long time, and then she smiled.

“Fine. Then go die,” she said softly.

“Once you’re dead, your brother can eat you.”
