Silas sat there alone in the courtroom for a long, long time.

Mr. Webb gathered the files from the table and walked over to him, stopping directly before him.

“Mr. Sterling.”

Silas slowly looked up, his eyes completely vacant.

Mr. Webb took a document out of his briefcase and held it out to him.

“Ms. Lancaster said she doesn’t want to pursue anything else. But there are some things I believe you should know.”

Silas took the document.

It was a supplementary statement issued by the hospital.

Serena Lancaster had already been showing clear signs of a threatened miscarriage. And the irritating food she had accidentally consumed was the primary cause of her losing the baby.

Silas’s breathing instantly grew ragged and uneven.

He continued flipping through the pages.

It was the hospital intake record.

Serena had stated that day that the only thing she had eaten was the pastries Fiona had given her.

Silas’s mind went blank with a deafening buzz.

He remembered that morning. Fiona had smiled so sweetly as she handed the pastries over.

“Serena, I bought these especially for you.”

He had been standing right there beside them.

He hadn’t paid it any attention. He had assumed they were just normal pastries.

Silas’s hands began to shake. The paper crumpled as he clenched it tighter and tighter.

There were more pages behind those. Things Mr. Webb had uncovered on his own.

With that, he turned and left.

The courtroom fell silent once more.

Silas sat there for a long time, his head bowed. Then he slowly gathered the documents, stood up, and walked away.
