Pick A Number, He Said, I Picked Divorce Chapter 07

Pick A Number, He Said, I Picked Divorce Chapter 07

After leaving the hospital, Silas got in his car and drove.

He circled the city for a long time—every place she might have gone, every shop she’d mentioned in passing before, even the mall she normally never wanted to visit. He made the rounds to all of them.

He couldn’t find her anywhere.

The sky slowly darkened.

While waiting at a red light, he glanced up without thinking and spotted that familiar little restaurant by the side of the road. The yellowed sign outside the door instantly pulled him back to the past.

Back then, the company was just starting up. Money was painfully tight.

Every single meal, they could only go to this place and order one bowl of the cheapest noodles to share between them.

Every time, Serena would give him the only fried egg in the bowl.

When he tried to give it back to her, she would smile and say,

“Let me eat this one first.”

“When you’ve made money in the future, you’ll have to pay me back.”

Back then, he had sworn silently to himself—when he got rich, he would make sure she lived the best life.

But now—what had he done?

He’d treated her grievances as melodrama, treated her cries for help as a tantrum, and personally snuffed out the last shred of hope she had.

Just then, the light turned green.

The moment he started moving, out of the corner of his eye he caught a figure—a silhouette so like Serena’s—walking into the restaurant.

He barely had time to think.

Before the car was even properly parked, he had already rushed out.

He shoved open the door, charged forward in a few strides, and grabbed the person by the arm. His voice trembled.

“Serena… is it you?”

The person he’d grabbed turned around.

It wasn’t Serena.

It was a completely unfamiliar face, her eyes wide with startled shock.

Silas froze.

After a few seconds, he hurriedly let go.

“I’m sorry.”

“I mistook you for someone else.”

The woman frowned at him, said nothing, and walked away.

Silas stood there for a long time before finally turning to leave.

The moment he stepped outside, a gust of wind hit him. His eyes suddenly stung.

It seemed he had lost the person whose world had once revolved entirely around him.

Silas went home, utterly dazed and hollow.

Fiona immediately rose from the sofa and came to greet him.

“How did it go? Was it just like I said?”

His gaze was unfocused, his voice hoarse.

“It was all real.”

Fiona paused for a beat, then forced the corner of her mouth into a comforting smile.

“Well… then she’s probably just upset and hiding somewhere.”

“When the trial comes, she’ll show up eventually.”

He nodded, walked past her, and went into his room.
