But Damon forced me into a riverfront villa.

Every wall held some version of our past.

“Elowen, whenever I missed you, I came here to look at these.”

“Please don’t give up on me.”

“When Luna’s mother’s ring fell into the river, I thought of you.”

“You once told me that when you were five, you watched your mother’s keepsake fall into a river and could not do anything.”

“I only helped her because I thought of your pain.”

“I really only treated her as your stand-in.”

“After today, I will cut ties with her completely. Okay?”

I looked at him calmly.

I did not believe a word.

“I’m tired,” I said. “I’m going to sleep.”

The next day, Luna contacted me first.

At a café, she stared straight at me.

“Help me buy a plane ticket to Veridia. I need to run.”

“My distant relatives are there.”

“I’m pregnant, and I cannot let him know.”

Pain stabbed through my chest.

I thought of my unborn child.

After I left Damon’s world, I found out I was pregnant.

That night, I was carefully treating the wound on my neck when a hand suddenly locked around my throat.

I cried out in pain.

Damon glared at me with a cruelty I had never seen before.

“Why did you send Luna to a dangerous border clinic in Veridia?”

“You knew she was pregnant.”

“That is my child, Elowen.”

“When did you become so vicious?”

“You’ve never been pregnant. You have no idea how important a child is to a mother.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

“She said she had relatives in Veridia. She asked me to buy the ticket.”

I forced back the tears rising in my throat.

“Damon, we had one too…”

We had a child too.

But Damon tightened his hand and cut me off.

“Her whole family is dead. What relatives?”

“Elowen, you are really good at lying.”

“And you forced her to cut her own face.”

“She cares about her appearance more than anything.”

“I was wrong about you.”

My mind went blank.

I looked past him at Luna.

“Tell him. You asked me for help.”

But Luna only looked at me coldly.

“When you ruined my face and forced me and my child to leave, did you think this day would come?”

It felt like thunder splitting my skull.

I sat frozen on the floor.

Luna walked over and pretended to help me up.

Then she leaned close and whispered, “My child cannot grow up without a father.”

“So you will have to be the sacrifice.”

Damon looked down at me with cold eyes.
