The Comments Said the Heartthrob Confessed Wrong, So I Rejected Him Chapter 13

The screenshot hit the crowd like a bomb.

I walked slowly through the circle, phone held up so everyone could see.

The date. The messages. All from today.

She still hadn’t returned the account.

The confession guy leaned in the longest.

He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated.

“So you played me?”

“Campus queen? More like campus clown. You’re really this pathetic?”

Brynn still denied it.

“No. It’s Sage. That’s her account. She photoshopped those messages. She wrote all those things, not me!”

“I never did anything to her! I even gave her clothes because I felt bad for her!”

One of my roommates spoke up.

“That shirt? You were gonna throw it out because you didn’t like it.”

“You were about to throw it away, but someone said that’d be wasteful, so you gave it to Sage instead. You actually called her your personal trash can. Said you’d just unload your leftovers on

her.”

Brynn opened her mouth to argue.

No one wanted to hear it.

With my name cleared, I turned and walked away.

Griffin followed.

His hair was messy. His breath was short.

“I’m sorry. For all the trouble I caused you.”

He told me everything-fast, urgent.

He’d never mistaken me for Brynn. It was always me.

He only accepted Brynn’s request because I rejected his. He wanted her to ask why.

And tonight’s dinner? It was an excuse to spend time with me.

“So?”

I looked at him, deep and steady. “Why do you like me? Is it this face?”

He was quiet for a beat.

I laughed. “Griffin. That face-you’ll get sick of it one day. What’s a crush worth if there’s nothing real behind it?”

He shook his head, eyes dark and serious.

“No. I’ll never get sick of you.”

I didn’t answer.

I left him standing there.

Promises mean nothing to me.

Before my dad remarried, he swore he’d bring me to the city.

He never did.

After my mom remarried, she said she’d visit.

She never came back.

So I only believe in myself. In what I hold in my hands.

That’s the only thing that’s ever really mine.
