The Captain Who Flew Into Her Storm Chapter 08

The Captain Who Flew Into Her Storm Chapter 08

The following day, Callum came to sign the divorce agreement.

He looked as though he had aged ten years overnight. His hand shook as he signed the final page.

“Elara,” he asked hoarsely, “if Tessa had never come between us, would we still have ended up like

this?”

I looked at his signature, then capped the pen.

“If it hadn’t been Tessa, it would have been someone else.”

“The real problem was never her. Deep down, you never respected my career, my work, or any of

the sacrifices I made for you.”

I took the agreement from the table and turned away.

This time, Callum didn’t follow me.

Clutching his copy of the agreement, he walked out of the Mountain West division office in a daze.

I later heard that Callum continued to spiral after returning to headquarters.

During a routine proficiency check, he lost focus and made a serious procedural error. The airline ultimately grounded him indefinitely.

The once-brilliant, arrogant captain had destroyed the career he valued above everything else.

As for Tessa, she was effectively shut out of the aviation industry after fraudulently claiming

authorship of the operations plan and jeopardizing flight safety.

I heard she eventually went to see Callum, but he shut the door in her face.

They blamed each other, refused to take responsibility, and eventually became trapped in a cycle of

mutual resentment.

None of it had anything to do with me anymore.

Once the court entered the divorce decree, the last chain binding me to my old life was finally broken.

That evening, a rare snowstorm descended over the Mountain West.

After working late, I stepped out of the control tower and found a black SUV at the curb, its roof dusted with snow.

Reid leaned against the driver’s door in a long black coat, holding a paper takeout bag.

As soon as he saw me, he walked over and placed the warm bag in my hands.

“I brought you some lamb stew. It’ll warm you up.”

His expression softened as he looked at me.

“You did an incredible job today, Director Vaughn.”

The week before, my handling of several in-flight emergencies had earned me a promotion to tower operations manager for the Mountain West division.

I cradled the warm bowl from the bag and noticed that Reid’s fingers had turned red from the cold. I couldn’t help smiling.

“Captain Sterling, did you really come all the way out here in the middle of the night just to bring me dinner?”

Reid held my gaze.

“Not just dinner.”

“I also came to ask whether Director Vaughn is finally ready to put her personal life back on the

schedule.”

Snowflakes settled on his shoulders, and the lights from the distant ramp reflected in his eyes.

His eyes were bright and open, without a trace of darkness in them.

I took a spoonful of the hot stew, and warmth spread through my body.

“That depends on how well you behave,” I said softly.

Reid laughed, the sound clear and warm in the snowy night.

“Then I’d like to apply for a permanent position.”

I lifted my gaze toward the sky.

An overnight flight climbed through the snow, its navigation lights blinking as it broke through the

clouds and rose into the clear air above.

At last, my own flight path led into clear skies.
