The Laziest Girl Alive Chapter 09

Dr. Lee glanced at Ethan, then back at me with a knowing smile.

“Well, Dr. Reed, your brother has come to see you. Should I give you two some privacy?”

“No need,” I said, pushing myself up a little in the beanbag chair. “He’s not an outsider.”

As soon as the words left my mouth, I saw Ethan’s shoulders visibly loosen.

He moved like he had finally gotten permission, carrying the food box over to set it down on my one

and only desk.

The box itself looked expensive and completely out of place in the stripped-down room.

“I, uh, heard from the housekeeper that you like cinnamon rolls, so I asked them to make some,” he said as he opened the box.

A warm, sugary smell filled the room.

It was something I had only mentioned once in passing, back when I was still living in that tiny town

foster mom would make them for me every now and then.

where my

I hadn’t expected Ethan to remember.

Off to the side, Dr. Lee picked up a piece with a smile that crinkled his eyes.

He tasted it and said, “Not bad, but these days Nora prefers higher-calorie stuff to make up for all that brainpower she burns.”

Then he fished a piece of chocolate out of his pocket, tore the wrapper open, and handed it to me.

“Here. Have a little snack first. We’ve got another big problem to tackle later.”

I took the chocolate and popped it into my mouth.

“Thanks, Doc Lee,” I mumbled around it.

As he watched the easy rhythm between me and Dr. Lee, Ethan’s eyes dimmed a little.

He just stood there, not even sure what to do with his hands.

Acting like he didn’t notice Ethan’s awkwardness at all, Dr. Lee said warmly, “Since you’re here,

want a tour of where your sister works? You might not know this, but she’s the linchpin of this place

now.”

Ethan blinked, then nodded and glanced my way as if asking for permission.

i just shrugged.

I took Ethan around the outer sections of the Institute.

Everyone who saw me stopped to nod and greet me with a “Dr. Reed.”

Then they would either hand me the reports they were holding or point to some equation on the

wall with a question.

“Dr. Reed, this is the latest data from the Deep Sky Array, and the deviation from our model just passed 0.03%.”

“Dr. Reed, Group A’s superconducting sample is showing an unexplained quantum tunneling effect

near absolute zero.”

I stopped, took the data report, gave it a quick glance, and then grabbed a marker to scribble a new algorithm across the wall.

“Refit it with this model.”

Then I walked over to the other side, studied the complex plot, tapped one node, and said, “The

issue isn’t the material. It’s the coolant. Go check the supplier.”

The whole time, I spoke quickly, making decisions almost without thinking.

Everyone around us split up and rushed off to work.

Ethan stayed silent for the entire tour.

It wasn’t until we were back in my apartment that he finally spoke in a rough voice.

“So… that version of you at home…?”
