A Letter from Alpha After Ten Years Chapter 03

Sophie trembled in Liam’s arms.

The gauze on her wrist had come loose, revealing the scars beneath.

Liam carefully lifted her back onto the bed, then turned to face me, disheveled on the floor. “She’s family to me. And she means every bit as much as you.”

His voice went low. “Can you just stop with her already?”

I didn’t answer. My eyes locked onto Sophie’s hand.

A ring on her ring finger caught the light, refracting a sliver of color.

Only one carat out of every million rough carats produces this shade of pink.

When Liam proposed, I told him I wanted an Argyle pink diamond for my bonding ring.

He’d tried three auction houses and found nothing I liked—even though I’d seen a pink diamond listed on the auction preview.

He’d held my hand and sworn, “Serena, I’ll get you one later.”

Later, all I got was a blue diamond.

Sophie caught my stare and raised her hand. Pink fire flickered at her fingertip.

“Pretty, isn’t it?” One corner of her mouth curved up. “Liam gave it to me. Worth ten thousand times more than your blue one.”

Her smile faltered. Then tears slid down her cheeks.

“Serena, I’m not even asking to be with him. I just want the ceremony. One ceremony. Wear white for a day. Be his fated mate—even if it’s just pretend.”

“Just one day. Then he’s yours again. Okay?”

Liam gently wiped her tears, then turned to me with pleading eyes. “Serena, please—”

The words tore out of me, “No!”

“Sophie, you’re the one who forced your way in. Don’t play the victim now.”

Liam’s face went cold. He almost shouted:

“Serena! I already agreed not to break the mark. Why won’t you even give her one ceremony?”

“I told you—my heart belongs only to you. Isn’t that enough?”

I spoke each word carefully: “Liam, you keep saying I’m the only one.”

“So what about that ring? How come she’s got the pink diamond you said you couldn’t find?”

His mouth opened. No sound came out.

Bitter sorrow swelled in my chest. Tears fell silently.

I turned and ran out of the hospital, shifted into my wolf, and sprinted into the deep forest.

I heard Liam calling behind me.

He started to follow—then Sophie said, quiet and sad, “I envy Serena. Her wolf is still whole.”

Liam stopped.

I don’t know how long I ran. I collapsed in an isolated part of the woods, completely spent.

The notes lit up. From future Liam.

[You went to the hospital today, didn’t you?]

[You saw her arms? Every time I reject her, she adds another scar. Her wolf’s asleep. Her wounds don’t heal anymore.]

[Serena, she has nothing else in this life. Please. Grant her this.]

I wiped my tears. This relationship had been me fighting alone from the start.

Even if I won against Sophie once, the outcome wouldn’t change.

I pulled myself together and went back to the werewolf hospital.

Liam came out of the room, his expression hard when he saw me.

“Serena, about the ceremony. Whether you agree or not, I’ve made my decision.”

“Also. Sophie wants you to attend. As a witness.”

When I stayed silent, his voice softened. “Serena, you saw her condition. Just give her this one thing. I’ll make it up to you. Okay?”

My voice came back calm. “Fine.”
