My expression didn’t change. I kept my voice polite and distant.

“Excuse me. You’re in my way.”

The smile on his face froze, then crumbled into a pleading look.

“Clara… please talk to me.”

“I know I was wrong. Whatever you want, I’ll do it.”

I looked at him. Cold. Steady.

“Anything? Then get as far away from me as possible. Can you do that?”

“Alex, when I said I never wanted to see you again, I wasn’t joking.”

“The moment I found out about Savannah, I gave up on you.”

He shook his head. “I don’t believe that.”

“I don’t believe you can throw away everything we had.”

“It was one mistake. People serving life sentences get reduced sentences.”

“Why can’t you give me one chance?”

He grabbed my hand and begged, just like years ago, tears streaming down his face.
