Five Years Together… And He Gave the Ring to My Old Bully Chapter 09

My words hit Alex hard. His face went pale.

Savannah lifted her chin.

“So what? No one likes a boring good girl like you anyway.”

I let out a cold laugh, grabbed her by the collar, and slapped her hard across that heavily powdered face. Again and again.

“I’ve wanted to do that for years. Glad I finally got the chance.”

Seeing Savannah’s swollen cheeks, Alex looked ready to explode. His eyes locked onto me.

Before he could say anything, Grant stepped in front of me.

“Who told you that?”

He met Alex’s gaze without flinching.

“Clara’s hardworking and incredible—and I like her.”

“She only ever ignored everyone else because of you.”

“What makes you think you’re the only one she could ever want?”

Alex fell silent.

Grant glanced at Savannah.

“You used to mock Clara for being a boring good girl no one could like.”

“But if I’m not mistaken, the way you dress now is just a copy of Clara’s style back in high school.”

His words hit the nerve.

After starting college, I’d changed my style a lot—trying to look more mature and put-together.

If Grant hadn’t pointed it out, I never would’ve noticed.

I let out a scoff. “Guess your so-called unique personality isn’t all that after all.”

I tugged on Grant’s sleeve.

“Let’s go get that checked out.”

Alex pointed at the bruise on his own face.

“Clara! I’m hurt too.”

“You promised you’d take care of me forever.”

When we were kids, he was a handful.

One day he’d kick a soccer ball through a neighbor’s window, the next he’d round up a bunch of kids and bully the little ones.

Every time, Mr. Thorne and Mrs. Thorne would punish him and lock him in his room to think about what he’d done.

And every time, I’d sneak in with ointment and cotton swabs.

I’d fuss over him while scolding, “Why do you have to talk back to your parents? Just say sorry and it’ll all be over.”

He would grin. “Because I know you’ll come anyway.”

Then he’d say, “You promised you’d always be good to me.”

Back then, we were young and naive. We really believed we’d always be each other’s number one. Now, I only felt tired.

“I take it back.” I said.

He froze for several long seconds.

Then, as Grant and I turned to leave, he suddenly shouted.

“Clara, come back! If you walk away today, we are done for good!”

I stopped. As the wind brushed past my ears, I could almost hear his smug little laugh—that look of “I knew it.”

He thought I’d cave first, like I always did.

But this time, I didn’t look back.

I took Grant’s hand and got into the car headed for the hospital.

“Then let’s never see each other again.”
