Five Years Together… And He Gave the Ring to My Old Bully Chapter 07

Alex froze, staring at me with a complicated look on his face.

“That day, I traveled across the country with my friend to catch her cheating boyfriend.”

“I only wanted to stop by and see you while I was there.”

The panic in his eyes hurt more than anger ever could.

“I never imagined I’d find you there, renting out the entire restaurant to celebrate Savannah’s birthday.”

“The person I trusted most, the love I was proudest of—you ended up dealing me the heaviest blow of all.”

I let out a bitter laugh.

“The staff even wished I’d find a boyfriend as perfect as you. How ironic is that?”

“Five years, Alex. You hid it all for five years.”

Everyone was congratulating them on their five-year love story and their perfect happy ending.

No one spared a thought for the decade of my life buried underneath it.

“If I’d never found out, were you planning to marry me and keep her as your soulmate for the rest of our lives?”

My eyes burned red. I grabbed him by the collar and shouted.

“Tell me why, Alex!”

“You knew how much I hated her. You knew exactly what she did to me.”

I pointed at my face.

“Look at me. The scar is still here.”

Back then, Savannah’s jealousy had burned so hot she slashed deep.

Even though my parents later got me the best scar cream available, at home and abroad, it never completely erased the scar.

Alex lowered his head. The rims of his eyes were red.

“Clara… listen to me. I can explain this.”

His eyes darted away, and his thumb rubbed absently against his index finger.

The same habit he’d had since childhood. The same tell he showed every time he lied.

And even now, he was reaching for another lie to cover the first one.

“You’ve got the wrong person.”

“That night, a younger student from my department rented out the restaurant for her birthday.”

“The girl you saw only looked a little like Savannah.”

He forced out a laugh.

“Come on—you know Savannah was never any good at school.”

“How could she possibly have gotten into Caldwell University?”

I laughed and cried at the same time—mourning my dead youth, and mourning the last shred of hope I still clung to.

I raised my hand and landed a stinging slap across his face.

The sound cracked through the restaurant.

His head snapped to the side—and that’s when he saw Savannah standing right there.
