The Godfather’s Last Regret: He Never Knew Her Chapter 07

The Godfather’s Last Regret: He Never Knew Her Chapter 07

Vanessa saw the regret on his face. She did her usual act—pretending to be hurt so he’d feel guilty.

“I’m sorry, Damon. It’s my fault. If I came from a better family, those officials wouldn’t talk that way.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks. “I know I act confident, but I’m really nothing. I’ve always been insecure around you.”

In the past, Damon would’ve sworn to protect her. This time, he just forced a bitter smile. “Don’t say that about yourself.”

Then he couldn’t help staring toward my side.

He started guessing. Maybe this was all my plan. My way of forcing him to come back.

Then he saw Lorenzo Vitale, in his diamond-studded white tuxedo, stride inside.

Damon broke.

His hands curled into fists. He couldn’t stop himself from texting me.

[I know it was wrong to dump you at the last minute. But don’t marry someone you don’t love just to be spiteful.]

[Me and Vanessa are just having a ceremony. To put old feelings to rest. After it’s over, I can marry you for real. I promise no one will know about this wedding. It’s just a formality.]

He pictured me smiling when I read his messages.

Then he saw the red exclamation mark.

His face went dark.

Ignoring Vanessa beside him, ignoring the stares, Damon grabbed Lorenzo’s arm. “Is this what you want? Forcing a woman who doesn’t love you to marry you?”

Damon was 5’11”. But standing next to Lorenzo, who was 6’3″, he still felt smaller.

Lorenzo’s eyes were ice. A smirk curled his lips. “If she’s willing, that’s exactly what I want. And who are you to say anything right now?”

“Sophia’s ex-fiancé?”

“The coward who ran away?”

“Or the cheater?”

Each word stabbed into Damon’s chest.

He lashed out. “Lorenzo, what’s there to be proud of? You’re getting my sloppy seconds. All I have to do is snap my fingers, and Sophia will come crawling back.”

Vanessa saw Damon losing it over me. Her face fell.

She ran up and grabbed him. “Damon! What the hell are you saying? This is our wedding day! Say another word and I won’t marry you!”

She thought that threat still worked. Damon yanked his arm away.

“Then don’t.”

Vanessa froze. She must have misheard.

Damon said it again, slowly. “If this wedding doesn’t matter to you, then it’s over.”

He started walking toward my ballroom.

Lorenzo’s smirk stayed in place. His eyes landed on me as I stepped outside.

The moment Damon saw me, his face lit up with hope. “Sophia. I changed my mind. The wedding’s back on. I’m not cancelling it.”

I looked at Vanessa standing behind him in her wedding dress, her expression a rainbow of emotions.

I smiled. “Damon, I’m not like you. You’re a puppy who comes whenever Vanessa whistles.”

“But me? I’m not.”

Damon’s face burned, but he still reached out for me.

“I didn’t realize it until now. But you’re the one I really want to marry.”

“We’re on the same path, aren’t we?”

Vanessa was losing it. She grabbed Damon’s hand and screamed. “Damon! You chased me like a dog! You don’t get to say when it’s over!”

“You’d be dead without me!”

She tried to guilt him with the “savior” card. Damon shoved her off. “Don’t think I don’t know. You’re not the one who wrote me those letters.”
