When Love Turns the Knife by Miley Chapter 06

Chapter 6 Ashes to the Sea

I watched the farce unfold through the screen, thoroughly entertained.

Victor called me.

His voice sounded oddly weak. “Is there anything else you need me to do? I’ll include it in the divorce package. No extra charge. required.”

I thought it over carefully before saying, “Yes. Please scatter my ashes in the ocean after I die. I don’t want Winston to get his hands on me. I don’t want to be buried in the Holt family cemetery.”

There was a pause on the other end.

After a few seconds, he said quietly, “I can’t promise that. I’ll probably be lining up in the afterlife by then.”

“Why?” His words made no sense. How could he die before me?

“Heart disease. Every day I wake up is a lucky break for me,” he replied casually, genuinely sounding like someone living on

borrowed time.

I sighed. “Then… Then, try to live a few more days? I’ll donate my heart to you if I die before you do.”

My heart was the only thing in my body that still worked as it should. I might as well use that to thank him for taking my case.

He went silent for a long time.

Suddenly, the hospital room door swung open. Winston walked in, his face eerily still.

I immediately ended the call.

I honestly assumed he’d explode in rage after what I’d done. I fully expected us to never see each other again.

Oddly enough, he did none of that. In fact, he barely reacted. Instead, he stationed himself by my bedside and said flatly, “If getting revenge on me makes you feel better, I don’t mind being ruined.”

He neatly lined up several takeout containers in front of me, picked up a spoon, and tried to feed me. “Eat a little, okay? If you don’t eat, how will you get better?”

I shook my head lightly, my voice steady and solemn. “Sign the divorce papers. Give me my freedom. I don’t want to hate you- not anymore. It’s wasted effort. I’d rather let the past be the past.”

Hatred drained what little strength I had left. Frankly, he wasn’t worth even a sliver of the effort I’d put into hating someone.

Winston stared at me blankly. He dipped a cotton swab in water and gently moistened my cracked lips. His eyes slowly reddened as he murmured, “Madison, you’ll be fine. Please, use all your strength to hate me, to get back at me. Do whatever you want in the future, okay?”

He gripped my hand tightly, as if that act alone could keep me from slipping away.

I looked at him calmly. “I want a divorce. That’s my only dying wish.

He lowered his head, his voice hoarse. “You’ll never forgive me, will you?”

I let out a bitter snort. “Why would you think I would? I never want to see you again, even after I’ve become nothing but ashes.”

That was why I wanted no grave, and certainly no headstone. All I wanted was for my ashes to be scattered into the sea. I wanted to be free from him forever.

His face grew even more ashen.

Suddenly, the door was thrown open with a loud bang. Madeline and Grace stormed in, seething with anger.

“You b*tch!” Grace shrieked. “How dare you spread such nonsense online? I’ll beat you to death! I should never have given birth to a demon like you!”

She raised her hand to strike me.

Winston stood up immediately and caught her wrist, his face expressionless. “I let you in to discuss something important. Touch her again, and I’ll chop your hand right off.”

I vaguely heard the sound of bones cracking. It was quickly followed by a scream like an animal being slaughtered.

Madeline stared at the scene in disbelief. She clutched her chest and put on a pitiful act. “Winston, what’s wrong with you? She’s destroyed both our reputations. Do you know that I lost the baby because of her? Do you know what pain I had to endure because of her?”

A deep furrow appeared between his brows. “That uterus was hers to begin with. So what if you lost the baby?”

Madeline looked devastated.

She collapsed onto a nearby chair, grabbed his hand, and questioned him through tears, “Winston, did you call me here just to flaunt your love for her? Are you punishing me now because of your guilt toward her?”

She shot me an angry glare, which was hilarious because she was acting as if I were some shameless homewrecker who’d stolen

her husband.

The audacity was frankly quite impressive.

Winston coldly shook her hand off and studied her, his gaze growing dark. “I called you here for a medical examination.”

Madeline froze before her eyes lit up with joy.

“I knew it. You still love me. The doctor told you, didn’t he? My heart and lungs aren’t in good shape after the miscarriage. You’re going to transplant her heart into me, right?”

She smugly sized me up like a hunter sizing up prey. “You’re dying anyway. Might as well die with some value.”

I felt drained and had no interest in partaking in their squabbles.

Still, I would rather crush my own heart than give it to her.

The scandal of Winston secretly transplanting his wife’s uterus into his first love had dominated the headlines over the past few days.

Sometimes I overheard nurses whispering outside the room. They whispered that Winston was cussed at everywhere he went.

People would scream at him for being a monster in human skin. Some bolder ones would even pelter him with rotten vegetables.

His reputation was destroyed with no hope of redemption. It was no wonder he had nothing better to do than sit by my bed every day.

My condition worsened rapidly.

I slipped into a coma. I could still hear what was going on around me, but I was unable to open my eyes or drive him away.

Victor arrived at the hospital with two police officers to take my statement, but I couldn’t respond at all.

When he saw my lifeless body on the bed, he bellowed in fury, “Winston, what did you do to her? Do you have any humanity left? Do you think no one will expose your crimes once she’s dead?”

Winston’s expression was calm as he intoned solemnly, “She’s my wife. No one wants her to live more than I do.”

Victor clenched his jaw. “Mr. Holt, it’s a shame you didn’t become an actor.”

The police conducted routine questioning. Madeline and Grace insisted that all my organ donations had been voluntary. They claimed that I’d only changed my mind later, causing all this trouble.

The police couldn’t make an arrest without my testimony. So, they had no choice but to leave and continue the investigation elsewhere.

Victor tried to take me away.

Unfortunately, Winston claimed his rights as my husband and legal guardian to have him forcibly.escorted away from my ward.
