Never Again in This Life Chapter 10

Never Again in This Life Chapter 10

I barely slept that night.

I checked our documents and luggage over and over, making sure I hadn’t missed a single thing.

At first light, I gently woke my grandmother.

“Grandma, we’re going somewhere very far away. Are you willing to come with me?”

Her memory wasn’t what it used to be, but she still trusted me more than anyone.

She looked at me and smiled as she nodded.

“Of course, dear. Wherever you go, I’ll go.”

At the airport, morning light streamed through the vast glass windows.

I held her hand and walked, step by step, toward our gate.

Maddox, Sterling, Elara.

Whatever happened to them from now on had nothing to do with me.

Two weeks later, in London, England.

My grandmother and I had already settled into our new life.

I rented an apartment with a small garden, very close to the university.

Grandma loved the grass and the gentle English sun.

I had a new phone number.

Everything and everyone back in America was part of a life that was no longer mine.

Still, some news has a way of finding you.

I didn’t have many close friends at university, but Mia was one of them.

She took it upon herself to forward me all the gossip I was missing via email.

Unable to find me, Maddox and Sterling had gone straight to my old apartment.

They knocked for a long time before the door was finally opened by a stranger—a middle-aged man who impatiently told them that the apartment had been sold to him half a month ago.

The two of them just stood there, frozen in the doorway.

Refusing to believe it, they went to check the public property records.

My name was no longer listed as the owner.
