Ethan raised an eyebrow. Surprised.

“I thought you’d soften. You always used to.”

I shook my head. Leaned back against the seat. Watched the magnificent Smoky Mountain sunset through the window.

“When I took that knife for him. On the operating table. My heart stopped once. After the police questioned him. After he walked out of the interrogation room. The first thing he did was text Tiffany. Told her not to worry. Told her he was okay. Ten minutes later. He finally called my parents to say their daughter was dying.”

“He has parents. Friends. Family. It’s not my job to worry about him anymore. My worry. Over the past three years. He used every last drop of it.”

Marcus messaged later. Derek had taken a plea deal. Shorter sentence.

I didn’t reply.

Next morning. Marcus called.

“Savannah. Derek’s been arrested. Breaking and entering. Resisting arrest. Assaulting an officer. It’s serious. He’s going to prison.”

“Can you… can you just come see him? He’s in the holding cell. Won’t stop calling your name. No one can calm him down.”

“Let it go, Marcus. Don’t contact me again. It’s better for everyone.”

Long silence on his end. Then he hung up. Defeated.

Davidson County Detention Center. Visiting room.

Tiffany showed up in a tailored outfit. Carrying some basic clothes for him. But she stood at the visitation window. Eyes darting. Wouldn’t get close.

Derek looked terrible. Hollowed out. Barely human. But seeing her, he forced a weak smile.

“Tiffany. You came. I knew you’d come.”

Tiffany twisted her fingers. Voice small as a mosquito.

“Derek… I came today to tell you. I’m leaving Tennessee soon.”

The smile on Derek’s face froze. Liquid nitrogen to the face.
