“You!”

Nina jumped up, already crying.

“I know you’ve never liked me. From the day I got here, you made me move downstairs. I did it—I thought you were stressed about exams. But your application is so important—how could I possibly change it?”

She bit her lip.

“Just because I didn’t score as high as you, you think I’d ruin you? Do you know I’ve always been jealous of you? You have great parents, a big house, good grades…”

She delivered the speech with practiced emotion.

My mom softened immediately. She took Nina’s hand.

“Nana, your sister just overthinks things. Don’t take it to heart.”

My dad’s face went red, then purple.

He slammed the coffee table.

“Elena! Are you out of your mind? Is your paranoia acting up again?”

“I’m not.”

“Not?” He was shaking, pointing at me. “We know exactly who Nina and Mrs. Shaw are. She’s been with us since you were a baby—she practically raised you! Nina’s only here for the exams, she’s been nothing but polite. Would she hurt you? What is wrong with you?”

Mrs. Shaw covered her face and started sobbing.

“Sir, ma’am, it’s my fault. I didn’t teach Nina to speak up when she’s wronged…”

“We shouldn’t have come.” She wiped her tears, but her eyes were still red. “Elena has always resented me. I thought if I stayed long enough, she’d see me as family. I was wrong.”

She grabbed Nina’s arm.

“Let’s go. Right now. We can’t stay where we’re not wanted.”

My mom sighed, turning to me with tired, disappointed eyes.

“Elena, she’s been with us for ten years. They’re not like that. Please stop imagining things, okay?”

Ten years.

What a heavy word.

Mrs. Shaw had been with us for a decade.
