He Said He’d Marry Her, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 14

“Did something happen?”

Daniel’s voice startled me.

I looked up and met his deep, searching eyes.

The embarrassment was too much to put into words.

I didn’t want to hide things from him.

But we were still too new, too unfamiliar. I couldn’t bring myself to say it.

“No.”

In the end, I just shook my head.

But I had already decided that I would get that brooch back, even if I had to ask Mr. Whitmore for help.

Once my mind was made up, I felt myself relax.

“It’s nothing, really. Just a small issue with the Whitmores.”

I tried to make my smile look natural.

“I can handle it.”

Daniel didn’t press. He just nodded.

“All right. But if you need anything, Ava, you can always come to me.”

“After all, you’re my fiancée now.”

He said it so naturally, just like Aunt Laura.

It wasn’t the first time he’d said it.

But my ears still burned.

Especially when I heard the word fiancée. The heat spread to the back of my neck.

I was engaged.

In two weeks, I would marry him.

A tangle of sourness and confusion twisted in my gut, but underneath it, there was a faint flicker of anticipation.

I didn’t dare meet his eyes.

I glanced at him quickly, then nodded and gave a soft hum of agreement.

Daniel didn’t say anything else.

The car pulled into the Harrington estate in Lake Forest.

When the door opened, he got out first, then turned to help me.

I saw the engagement ring on his middle finger.

He hadn’t taken it off since the day he put it on.

Daniel helped me out of the car.

But once I was standing, he didn’t let go.

He just naturally laced his fingers through mine.
