“Ava, I went to get the brooch from Ethan, just like you asked.”

“But he won’t give it to me. He said if you want it back, you have to tell him yourself.”

I instinctively glanced at Daniel, who was sitting beside me.

For some reason, I felt a pang of guilt.

We were still practically strangers.

He had taken a work call in the car just a few minutes earlier.

“If you’re trying to interfere with my engagement to Brooke, I’d save your breath.”

“If you want the brooch, you can come get it the same way you gave it to me.”

“Something this valuable shouldn’t be passed through a third party.”

I took a deep breath, trying to keep my voice steady.

“Mia is my best friend. Just give it to her.”

“I’ll take full responsibility for any consequences.”
