The priest looked at her and repeated the vow.

“Miss Ava Hart, do you take Mr. Bennett Shaw to be your husband, to share your life with him for all the days of your life?”

Outside, Graham was still roaring like a trapped beast, convinced that if his voice was loud enough, sad enough, he could make her turn back.

But Ava didn’t.

She looked at Bennett, at the steady love in his eyes, and clearly said the word that decided everything.

“I do.”

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it struck through the heavy oak doors like a thunderclap.

In that instant, Graham seemed to have the bones pulled from his body. He lost all his strength and collapsed onto the cold marble floor, his eyes filled with the vast emptiness of a world that had crumbled.

“Why…” he murmured, his voice as faint as the wind.

Inside the church, the priest closed the book.

“The groom may now kiss the bride.”

Bennett lowered his head and kissed Ava with tenderness and care.

Thunderous applause erupted, filling the church with blessings.

The sound shattered the last of Graham’s reason. He sprang from the floor like a madman and charged inside.

“Ava!”

The bodyguards immediately moved to restrain him.

“Sir, please leave at once, or we will be forced to take measures.”

Graham heard nothing. He just crashed forward with all his strength, a bull driven into a dead end.

The guards stopped warning him. Cold fists struck him again and again.

As Graham curled up on the floor, Ava was on Bennett’s arm, smiling as she accepted the blessings of her guests.

The guests kept their voices low, but their words were still clear.

“Is that Ava’s ex-husband? He actually dared to show up here.”

“Serves him right. His wife was on death’s door, and he was busy promoting his mistress. Nora Blake testified for Ava and got put in a wheelchair for life because of them. How does a man like that have the nerve to ask for forgiveness?”

“No one would go back to him.”

“Still, I’m surprised Bennett married her. The Shaw family is notoriously strict about who their heir marries.”

“You didn’t know?” another voice said with admiration. “I heard that to get his mother to approve this marriage, Bennett stood outside her study for three days straight. No food, no water, didn’t move an inch.”

“Seriously?”

“Of course. How else do you think the old-fashioned Shaw matriarch would accept a divorcée as the future lady of the house so quickly?”
