Today, Ava would marry Bennett Shaw. All of Virginia was talking about it.

My assistant, Evan, stood in the empty office and looked at me. He was the only one who had stayed.

“I still don’t understand,” he finally said, breaking the silence. “Mr. Lockwood, why… why did she become so absolute?”

He paused, choosing his words.

“She used to love you so much.”

“I don’t blame her.” I sat in the only remaining chair, my voice low and hoarse. “I was the one who was wrong.”

I closed my eyes. The riding accident that changed everything felt like it was yesterday.

“In that accident, if she hadn’t pushed me out of the way, the one hit by that horse should have been me.”

“She saved my life, and when she needed me most, I was with Piper.”

“After she woke up, I thought her coldness was indifference. I thought she was tacitly accepting the situation. I even thought I could finally have it all.”

I let out a self-mocking laugh that sounded harsh in the empty room.

“I was a fool. It wasn’t that she didn’t care. It was that she was giving up on me.”

“Ava was never one to suffer in silence. I was too arrogant to see it.”

I looked at Evan. “Go on. The company is gone. You don’t need to follow me anymore.”

Evan looked at me, his eyes full of worry. “Where will you go?”

“There’s still one place I need to go.”

He knew where I was going and didn’t try to argue. But as he reached the door, he turned back.

“There’s something… I’m not sure if I should tell you. It’s about Piper.”

“She’s been making a scene in prison, trying to get a reduced sentence. She said… she said the child isn’t yours.”

I nodded, so calm it surprised even me.

“I know.”

Evan froze. “You… you knew?”

“After she was arrested for what she did to Nora, I had my doubts.”

My voice was flat, as if I were stating a fact that had nothing to do with me.

“I had a DNA test done. The child isn’t mine.”
