He Said I Was Clingy, So I Walked Away on the Day Our Contract Ended Chapter 12

His eyes brightened a little.

“So you pulled away because of a misunderstanding. There’s no one else, Maddie…”

Now that the misunderstanding was cleared up, I felt a strange sense of relief—not because it mattered all that much, but because the knot of irritation in my chest had finally loosened.

“I’m sorry I never took the time to check what really happened and let this misunderstanding build up, but it only goes to show how little you mean to me—I couldn’t even be bothered to verify things or confront you about it.”

“So I still want the divorce.”

I looked at the safe, then at Asher’s dimming eyes. I forced myself to say the truth.

“I didn’t cheat on you. But I also don’t love you. I’m sorry.”

For a heartbeat, everything seemed to freeze completely in place. I could see myself reflected in his pupils.

His breathing went soft. The corners of his eyes burned redder.

I pushed on.

“I tend to crave dramatic theatrics. It amused me to cling to you and watch you get all unraveled and flustered because of me.”

I took a breath and looked away. I couldn’t watch him fall apart. I’d cave.

“Now the contract’s up…”

His hand caught my wrist. I looked up. He was staring at me like he was afraid of what I’d say next.

“Before you overheard that conversation—did you plan to divorce me when the contract ended?”

I blinked. Then shook my head.

No. Before that day, I’d been having too much fun. I played my part during the day and enjoyed myself at night. The contract never crossed my mind.

Almost three months had passed, and we’d become attached at the hip and fit together surprisingly well. He had his appetites. I had mine. We fit.

“Maddie, that just means you’re not done with me yet.”

He pressed my hand against his chest. Through his shirt, I felt something hard. I rubbed it without thinking.

He gasped and buried his face in my neck.

“I only just got this piercing done recently, it’s still tender and swollen—take it slow and gentle.”

I stared at him, confused.

“Why would you get a genital piercing there?”

His voice came out rough.

“Something to please you. I just learned about it. Maddie, I can be fun too.”

His teeth chattered.

He guided my hand to unbutton his shirt. Underneath his crisp suit, there was dark lacy intimate undergarments.

“I put this on this morning. I was going to video call you from the office once you woke up. Bet it beats whatever that smooth-talker’s got.”

My head throbbed. Had I driven him insane? Where was he even learning this stuff?

His hot breath hit my neck. He pressed against me, each breath getting heavier.

“I can be fun, Maddie. So many things you haven’t tried with me yet. I’ll get pierced anywhere you want. Even if you don’t love me…”

His voice broke. He bit gently at my neck.

The temperature inside the room shot up sharply amid the tension. My legs felt weak.

His tone turned hypnotic and tempting, just like a siren meant to lure someone in.

“It truly doesn’t matter if you don’t love me at all. Just use me however you want until you’ve had your fill of me, and we can file for divorce afterward. Can you do that for me?”
