After we finished eating, I tagged along with Ezra to pick up some textbooks he needed.

When we said goodbye, there was no trace of irritation left on his face.

I thought the whole thing was behind us.

But the next morning, Ezra fixed his gaze on me the second he walked into the classroom and didn’t look away.

I endured it for as long as I could before finally giving in. * Why are you staring at me nonstop like this… *

He leaned back in his chair and drew out a smug, taunting little “Oh.” “Just think it’s funny, that’s all. I honestly thought you would’ve switched seats already.”

I was speechless.

Can he seriously not let it go? He was still hung up on me planning to switch seats yesterday.

I took a slow, deep breath. “I thought we’d already patched things up between us yesterday…”

“When did I ever agree we’d buried the hatchet? Never told you, though. I’m petty, I hold grudges, and I can stay annoyed over a single thing for a long time.”

His tone was so irritatingly smug I almost wanted to throw my coffee in his face.

Turns out he only had a sharp tongue, and had already gotten over the whole thing.

After spending a week getting to know him, I realized he was genuinely a decent person deep down.

One evening, my English teacher kept me after class for a long talk that ran late.

When I walked back to the classroom, he was still sitting at his desk waiting for me.

He walked me all the way to the bus stop and only left once he’d watched me board.

He was nothing like Jesse and the rest of them.

One thing kept nagging at me, though: on the math unit test the day before, Ezra had gotten eighty percent of the questions right.

But ever since he enrolled, he’d never bothered paying attention in any class and skipped regularly.

Had he been a good student in the past? If so, why had he stopped trying now?
