He Deleted My Number After 972 Messages of Love Chapter 10

He Deleted My Number After 972 Messages of Love Chapter 10

During lunch period, I sat in the school pavilion going over vocabulary flashcards.

A couple of girls from class came over to find me.

After making small talk about nothing in particular, they hesitated before speaking up.

“Sadie, how’s it going with your new desk partner? Have you two hit it off yet?”

“Uh… could you do us a favor and check if he’s got a girlfriend? If he’s single, could you also ask what kind of girls he likes?”

I shook my head. “We barely talk, so I can’t really help you out. I’m gonna ask our homeroom teacher if I can switch my seat anyway.”

Seating arrangements were switched around every two months. Asking to change seats out of nowhere would make the teacher suspicious—which was why Chloe had never dared to ask before, afraid the teacher would figure out she and Jesse were a thing.

But Ezra and I had only just become desk partners, so it shouldn’t be too hard to come up with a reasonable excuse to move now.

“Huh? Why would you want to switch? You have no idea how many people would kill to sit next to him. Did he do something to offend you?”

“Nothing like that.” My expression stayed neutral. “I never really took a liking to him from the very start.”

“Alright then… if you do end up switching, you could swap spots with me, y’know.” She giggled a little.

Once they left, I went back to memorizing my vocabulary words.

The vines behind the pavilion rustled.

I turned around.

Ezra stepped out from behind the greenery, a faint, knowing smile playing on his lips as he met my eyes.

I’d gotten caught talking about someone behind their back for the very first time.

He lifted one hand. My first instinct was that he was going to hit me, and I squeezed my eyes shut in shock.

Instead, he flipped open the front cover of my vocabulary notebook to check my name written inside.

“Sadie?” He shot me a glance. “You ought to just call yourself Ungrateful, honestly.”

It was clear he also remembered everything that had happened on that bus ride.

Ezra tapped the notebook lightly against his palm. “I’ve got the same question those girls had, actually. What did I even do to tick you off this badly?”

I pressed my lips together, overwhelmed with embarrassment.

Ezra straightened up and looked down at me.

After a long pause, the warning bell for next class rang.

He tossed my notebook lightly down in front of me. “Interesting.”

His footsteps faded as he walked off.

I noticed he was heading toward the school gates, and I spoke up instinctively. “Class is gonna start any minute now…”

Ezra didn’t glance back. “Why would I go back if I’m just getting under your skin? I’m not gonna throw myself at you just to be unwanted.”
