I watched Nathan’s face crumble, his last hope gone.

Even while he begged me to come back, he couldn’t let go of that child. Because he thought it might be his only chance at fatherhood.

I understood his desperation. But I also saw his hypocrisy for what it was.

Nathan’s eyes churned with rage and regret. He strode to Vanessa and loomed over her.

“Who gave you the right to hurt Emily, to lie to me?”

He didn’t wait for an answer. He raised his foot and drove it into her stomach.

Vanessa screamed, collapsing as blood spread beneath her red dress.

Sirens wailed. An ambulance arrived.

The baby was lost to a “fall.” Derek and his crew were arrested for extortion and assault.

None of it mattered to me anymore.

I placed the divorce papers on the table and walked toward the exit.

Hurried footsteps followed. Nathan stopped two paces behind me, his lips moving without sound.

“Emily… I’ve lost you forever, haven’t I?”

I paused but didn’t turn. “If I said no…”

His face went pale, and the bell rang in his head.

Soft. Heavy. Desperate.

He couldn’t imagine how many times she’d heard that sound, or how much pain came with every ring.

“Would you believe me?”

He closed his eyes and shook his head in defeat. “I was too selfish. I…”

I cut him off, my voice flat. “You and I are done. From now on, you go your way, and I go mine. No debts. No hard feelings. Nothing.”

The last rays of sunset fell across his face, catching the tears that slipped silently down his cheeks.

He opened his mouth, waiting for one more bell.

But there was nothing.

And I walked away from that ringing nightmare for good, toward a life I could finally call my own.

Maybe someday, my child would come back to me. And when they did, they’d find a whole family, and a whole, healed heart.
