He Brought Me a College Guy, Saying I’d Never Touch Him—But I Kept Him Chapter 10

But Nathaniel didn’t feel happy about her silence.

He crushed the death certificate in his fist, creasing it.

Three years ago on that day. What was he doing?

He couldn’t remember.

He scrolled through his phone.

That day, aside from wiring twenty thousand dollars to some influencer he’d known for three days for a new handbag. He also missed three calls from Isabella.

He sent all of them to voicemail.

He couldn’t imagine what that day had been like for her.

That day, she buried her father alone. And her husband, standing here today, had just found out that his father-in-law had been dead for three years.

So that was why she always went back to her hometown for a few days each year. Her father’s memorial.

She went alone. Visited the cemetery alone.

And Nathaniel, who knew his father-in-law had been injured in the military, never once asked, “How’s your dad doing?”

Nathaniel pushed his feelings down. Put that careless expression back on.

“You called me all the way back here just for this?”

“She didn’t tell me herself. You can’t blame me for not being a good son-in-law.”

Eugene stared at him. Said nothing.

Nathaniel shifted under the weight of that look. Reached for a cigarette.

“Fine, fine. I know what you’re going to say.” He walked to the window, turned his back.

“I’m a bad husband. I didn’t care about her. I’ve been terrible to her all these years. You don’t have to tell me. I know.”

He paused, waiting for his father to jump in.

Instead, Eugene said, “The kidnappers weren’t after Leonard. They were after me.”
