Ethan’s face went blank. He stared at Luke, then at me.

“Girlfriend?”

Luke pulled me behind him, putting himself between us. “Yes.”

Luke’s voice was even. “Please stop harassing her.”

Ethan’s eyes turned red. “Who the hell are you? What gives you the right?”

“The right that comes with being Dawn’s boyfriend.”

“I don’t believe you!”

Ethan spun to me, voice shaking. “Dawn—tell him! Tell him we’re getting married! Tell him you love me!”

I stepped out from behind Luke. “Ethan. We’re done. You know that.”

“Done?”

He laughed, bitter. “Because of him? You’ve known him five minutes! We had five years—and you’re throwing that away for this guy?”

“You threw it away first.”

“I did not!”

“You did it three times. And then you handed her my scarf. You know how that works—one person, one scarf. Guess I wasn’t the one after all.”

He had nothing to say.

Elena scrambled up and ran to his side.

“Ethan, you see now? She’s a cheat! She doesn’t love you—I’m the only one who’s real!”

Ethan didn’t even look at her. His eyes were locked on me.

“Dawn. Tell me this isn’t true.”

Luke took my hand. “Come on, Dawn. Let’s go.”

I nodded and got in Luke’s car.

As we pulled away, I saw Ethan still standing there in the mirror. Elena yapping beside him.

His world looked like it was crumbling.

The car was quiet. “Thank you, Luke.”

I said softly. “Don’t mention it.”

He kept his eyes on the road. “But lying isn’t the best way to solve things.”

I blinked.

“Luke..?”

“I guessed.”

He smiled. “When you looked at him, there was no love in your eyes. Just exhaustion.”

My eyes stung.

Being seen through—it felt strange.

“I’m sorry for using you.”

“It’s okay. If you need me to keep playing the part, I can.”

I went home and didn’t sleep.

“Luke—what you said yesterday. Was that still an offer?”

He was sipping tea. Looked up.

“Which part?”

“Playing my boyfriend.”

He set the cup down and looked at me seriously.

“Dawn. That’s not a joke.”

“I know.”

I said, “I just want him to give up. Once he leaves, we’re done.”

Luke was quiet for a long time.

“Okay.”

From then on, Luke picked me up and dropped me off. We ate together. Walked together. Like a real couple.

Ethan never came to the gallery anymore.

But I knew he was still around. He followed us every day, like a ghost.

A week later, Elena showed up again.

This time, she burst straight into the gallery, clutching a bottle. “You
convincing bitch, Dawn—I swear to God I’ll end you!”

She unscrewed the cap and threw the liquid at me.

The stench hit—acid.

I froze. Then someone shoved me aside. Luke.

He blocked me with his body.

The acid splashed across his back.

His shirt dissolved with a sizzle—skin burned raw under the hole.
“Ah!”

Luke groaned, crumpling to his knees.

The gallery erupted in chaos.

I rushed over, saw the mess of his back, and my brain just went blank.
