He Didn’t See Our Son Suffocate, He Saw Her Concert Tickets Chapter 06

“E…Ethan…”

Vivian shot to her feet, her face drained of color.

Ethan stepped inside, his gaze flicking between the men and her.
“What was all that? What do you mean, Fiona took the fall?”

The men traded looks, none of them daring to speak.

Vivian forced a smile through gritted teeth. “We were just — we were joking around. About how kind and trusting she is…”

She trailed off, noticing the way Ethan’s expression was darkening.

“Wait. Aren’t these the men who supposedly assaulted you? So why are they in your house, ‘joking around’?”

Vivian swallowed hard, fumbling for words, when the men suddenly broke.

“Mr. Shaw, we were just doing what we were paid to do — please, don’t take it out on us — it was Vivian who—”

She shot them a look and their mouths snapped shut.

That was all Ethan needed. He let out a bitter, humorless laugh.
“Vivian. That was one hell of a performance. You even had me fooled.”

His face grew darker. Under that stare, Vivian finally stammered, “I…I just wanted to see who you really cared about more. That’s all. It was just a joke…”

“A joke?” Ethan’s voice exploded.

He had forced Fiona to apologize. He had, in one careless sentence, ripped open her deepest wound. And now she was divorcing him.

His whole body shook. He closed his eyes.

“When did you turn into this? You played me. You kept me in the dark and let Fiona take all the suffering.”

Vivian bit her lip like she was the victim. “I was just messing around. I didn’t mean anything by it. Ethan, let’s just go — we’re going to miss the flight.” She grabbed her suitcase.

Ethan stopped her. “Forget it. I changed my flight. You can go whenever you want. From here on out, we go our separate ways.”

Vivian froze. “Ethan…what’s that supposed to mean? We were going to start over together overseas. You can’t just throw me away over this.” Her voice pitched higher. “You waited for me all these years! I’m back now — we can finally—”

He shook her hand off.

“We were good together once. But I’m married. We can only ever be friends.” He paused, his voice turning cold. “But now I see it clearly. You’ve changed. You’re conniving. It honestly disgusts me. We can’t even be friends anymore.”

He turned to the men, fire in his eyes. “All of you — get out. Don’t ever let me catch you bothering Fiona again.”

They scrambled out, tripping over each other, yes sir, yes sir.

As he turned to leave, Vivian grabbed his arm, a desperate edge in her voice. “I really didn’t mean it, Ethan. Give me one more chance.” Then her tone shifted. “Besides, you know Fiona. She’s not coming back. Why are you staying here waiting for her?”

“What the hell are you talking about?” He shoved her off, furious. “She will come back. I’m going to find her right now. She’ll be back any minute.”

He spun around and walked out, but the certainty on his face flickered and died before he even reached the door. His heart lurched.
