He Said I Was Unphotogenic Yet My Photos Shocked The Entire School Chapter 07

The final round requirements came quickly. The admissions office wanted all five finalists to submit a new three-minute short.

**Theme:** [Me and This School.]

I sat staring at a blank document for a long time.

Derek had guided me through the one-minute video. But three minutes required me to stand on my own and say who I was.

Derek sat across from me in the library, his lens cap off. “What do you most want to tell incoming students?”

I thought for a long time. “That it’s okay to be ordinary.”

The words surprised me.

Freshman year, I’d felt ordinary too, not pretty enough, not outgoing enough, not articulate enough, not even photogenic.

Then Jason kept telling me I wasn’t photogenic, and I hid behind the lens. I held reflectors, imported files, retouched others’ photos.

Derek slid his notebook toward me. “Then start there.”

Over the next few days, we shot new material.

I stopped wearing dresses I’d bought to look slimmer. I stopped copying Claire’s smile.

Derek had me wear my usual white blouse and jeans. We shot the library at dawn, the field after rain, the study lounge still lit at midnight.

He said, “A promo isn’t a beauty pageant. It’s about making people believe someone actually lived here, worked here, changed here.”

At the alumni wall, I stood looking at all the smiling faces and remembered graduation day.

I’d wanted Jason to make me look decent. Not to impress anyone. Just so my last memory of college wasn’t something so awkward. But he couldn’t even give me that much patience.

In the frame, I slowly looked up.

“I used to think I wasn’t meant to be seen. But I learned that not everyone’s light comes the same way. Some people are like summer, bright and warm. Others are like a lamp at dusk, taking time to glow.”

Derek didn’t yell cut. Wind came across the alumni wall.

I heard him say, “Good. No need for another take.”

That was when I understood. He wasn’t capturing me getting prettier. He was capturing the moment when I finally wasn’t hiding anymore.

Jason came to see me once during the final shoot.

He had a detailed script he’d written. “Emma, I watched your first video. I admit, I never really paid attention when I shot you before. I can help you with the final.”

I looked at his script. If this had come earlier, I’d have stayed up all night with joy. But now I just shook my head. “No thanks.”

His voice dropped. “You’re still mad at me?”

I met his eyes. “Jason, you knew the version of me who always waited for you. You don’t know who I am now.”

He stood there, his hands slowly clenching at his sides.

I turned and walked toward Derek. His camera was already set up.

This time, I didn’t need anyone to give me an angle. I stepped into the light myself.
