Finally, she spoke.

“I knew a little.”

“How much?”

“I knew he was going to make Kat sick so she’d miss the application season. But I didn’t know what he was using. And I didn’t know… that she would die.”

“Are you sure you didn’t know?”

Tessa raised her head, her eyes completely red.

“I really didn’t know. He told me it would just make Kat take a year off from school, that it wouldn’t actually hurt her.”

“He said after the application season was over, he would tell Kat the truth and help her recover.”

“He said one year wouldn’t ruin anything.”

“I believed him.”

She started to cry.

“Do you know who Katerina Ferraro was to you?”
