They Regretted It After I Gave Up Chapter 06

In the long corridor outside the operating room, Beckett leaned against the wall, glancing at his watch.

He was calculating the time.

He was waiting for the drug that would put me to sleep for another month to fully take effect.

Tessa’s grades were excellent, but her overall profile was always just a step behind mine.

And I had always been one of the top applicants in our school.

As long as I missed the final Larkin Scholars interview, Tessa would be free of her toughest competitor.

In Beckett’s plan, this would help her in another way, too.

Having a “seriously ill” sister at home would give Tessa, the devoted caregiver, a more compelling story for her interview.

Mom clutched a tissue, her fingers trembling.

“Beckett, are you sure Kat won’t find out when she wakes up? The way she’s been looking at me lately… it feels wrong.”

Beckett smiled at her, his tone still gentle.

“Auntie, Kat trusts me. Once Tessa gets the scholarship, I’ll take Kat to Switzerland for treatment. Their muscle recovery program is excellent. She’ll be fully recovered in a year. By then, she’ll think we were helping her all along.”

Dad said quietly, “I suppose this is the only way. Tessa has always been such a sensitive child. If she knew her sister was doing this for her…”

“She won’t know,” Beckett cut him off. “This stays between the three of us.”

Just then, the light above the operating room door began to flash.

The door was thrown open.

“Who is Katerina Ferraro’s family?” a nurse called out urgently. “The patient has been poisoned. She drank antifreeze. Contact toxicology and nephrology, now. Prepare for emergency resuscitation.”

The smile froze on Beckett’s face.

The bouquet of white roses in his hand fell to the floor, petals scattering across the linoleum.

“What did you say? Poisoned?” He lunged forward and grabbed the nurse’s arm. “She’s been bedridden this whole time. Where would she get poison?”

“We found an empty bottle in the changing room. The patient drank it herself.”

For a moment, Beckett’s mind went blank.
